Venture into the Bay of Fundy from the southern tip to spot seabirds, dolphins, porpoises and whales.
The Bay of Fundy tides create exceptional conditions for whales and seabirds with its high tides and plentiful food. One of the best ways to see the tides and marine life, is by taking a boat tour, with the best chances of spotting whales and seabirds. This tour from Brier Island at the tip of St Mary’s Bay in Nova Scotia, has some of the best whale spotting opportunities in the bay.
Depending on the time of year, the types of whales you see can change. Most cetaceans are absent from these waters during winter months, but in the spring the fin and minke whales arrive, as do the porpoises. In June humpbacks arrive from their breeding areas in the Caribbean Sea and dolphins are more frequently seen. By mid-July all five species are commonly sighted and remain in the area until late autumn.
The cruises are fully narrated by experienced naturalists and marine biologists. During each cruise, the guides and naturalists are involved in data collection. This is compiled and made available to various organisations around the world. The vessel, the 50-foot Mega Nova, has a 50-passenger capacity and is equipped with washrooms and an open viewing deck with seats.
Depending on the sightings, tours last three to five hours. We recommend dressing warmly as it gets cooler on the water.
