Haliburton Forest Wolf Centre

Observe Ontario’s wolves in their natural habitat, learning more about their lifestyles from staff and exhibits.

Ontario’s provincial parks and forests are home to plenty of wildlife from birds to moose, but one of the most elusive is the wolf. Between 350 and 1000 mature wolves are estimated to be in the province, most commonly the timber (grey) wolf. One of the best places to see them going about their daily lives is at the Haliburton Forest Wolf Centre. The centre is a 464 sq m (5,000 sq ft) facility with one-way glass overlooking a resident wolf pack, and other educational aspects.

Listen for howls and look for the gleam of yellow eyes between the trees. In the peace and quiet behind one-way glass, you have the opportunity to watch the wolf pack go about their lives and interact with each other. You can learn more about their behaviours from the onsite staff and the museum-style exhibits in the centre. You can also visit the observatory to try and see them from above.

The centre is designed to ensure the least intrusion into the wolves’ natural habitat and lives, and the wolves behave as they would in the wild. Depending on when you’re visiting, you may see different aspects of their lives. For example, spring is typically when pups are born. The centre also puts on special events throughout the year including painting sessions or dinners overlooking the wolves.
