Nihi Sumba Island

Set in a dramatic location on a remote island with an ancient tribal culture, Nihi Sumba Island is an exclusive getaway that offers guests unrivalled luxury and the local community the skills and education to ensure a sustainable future.

Built in the style of a traditional village with thatched roofs and entirely local materials, Nihi Sumba Island blends seamlessly with the environment it works so hard to protect. It is a supremely chic and indulgent place to stay yet at its core is a promise to empower the local community and ensure their ancient animist culture survives in the modern world. Over 90% of the staff are local, service is warm and the range of activities on offer include plenty of options for interacting with islanders.

Guests are encouraged to help out in the local school, to visit megalithic burial sites and learn about local culture, or to take a 'spa safari' visiting local villages en route to a remote beachfront spa or hiking though jungle to reach a private treatment room with panoramic views over the rice terraces. You can also tackle the renowned surf break, ride a horse along the beach, enjoy lavish meals or simply lounge by your private pool.

Sleek, sumptuous and yet deeply rooted in local culture, the 33 villas are incredibly stylish and blend contemporary designer chic with traditional fabric, art and crafts. All have private pools and gardens, an outdoor bale (seating area) and wonderful sea views.

The luxurious Samaya Seminyak is a peaceful retreat in the heart of lively Seminyak offering the best of both worlds. The 52 spacious and contemporary villas are set amongst manicured lawns and water features and each offers a private pool.

Nihi Sumba Island

Description

Situated in splendid isolation on the west coast of Sumba, Nihi Sumba Island is one of Indonesia’s most impressive hotels. Originally built as a surfers' retreat, the resort now offers magnificent accommodation against the backdrop of lush tropical rainforest and the Savu Sea.

Whilst made famous by its surf break, today Nihiwatu offers a truly unique proposition combining luxury and exclusivity with philanthropic values and Sumbanese hospitality. There are a huge host of activities and experience to enjoy, great food and friendly service.

Nihi Sumba Island has a wonderfully secluded and undeveloped setting on the southwest side of Sumba, an island in eastern Indonesia to the south of Komodo. A remote idyll, there are a handful of local villages in an area that is incredibly beautiful and peaceful.

Flights from Bali to Sumba take around 90 minutes and the resort is a further 90 minutes’ drive from the airport passing through Sumbanese villages and rolling hills.

Nihiwatu sits on 2.5 km of private beach with a beautiful stretch of golden sand perfect for long walks. Conditions are great for surfing but swimming in the sea is advised for stronger swimmers only and at some times may be too rough for any swimming.

Behind the resort lies 567 acres of unspoilt natural reserve.

Our opinion

A stay at Nihi Sumba Island is a truly unique experience with an unbeatable location and a fantastic range of activities and excursions. Couple this with the luxurious villas, beautiful seclusion and friendly service from the Sumbanese staff and you have a very special stay. There is a minimum stay of five nights, but the most reliable flights in and out of Sumba are once a week, so it is worth staying a full seven nights.

Rooms

The 33 villas are spread across the hillside. Hand built using local materials, the villas offer a feeling of understated luxury in keeping with their rustic, undeveloped setting with crisp white linen and hand finished furniture from local craftsmen.

All villas have a pool and veranda with outdoor living space, but vary in size from comfortable one bedroom villas perfect for couples to two, three, four or even five bedroom residences ideal for extended families or groups of friends travelling together.

Many of the villas enjoy far reaching views of the beach that the resort sits on, although some of these are partially obscured by the lush vegetation.

Activities, diving & excursions

Surfing conditions are excellent; the resort originated as a surf resort and surfing still takes pride of place. However, this is very far from the only activity on offer and an equal number of guests come to enjoy the huge array of other activities and experiences.

There is a superb riding centre and magnificent yoga spa perched at the top of the resort with far reaching views. Paddle boarding and fishing are available and beach games such as volleyball, football or even beach golf can be set up.

The resort also has its own chocolate factory where guests can visit and try their hands at chocolate making themselves.

Please note, if you wish to surf we highly recommend pre-booking slots on the break as these are highly in demand. However, if you are taking a lesson, these may be booked while at the resort.

Food & drink

Breakfast and dinner are served in Ombak, a lovely open-air restaurant with sand underfoot and spectacular views of the long stretch of beach. Once a week there are communal meals with a delicious seafood barbeque, and throughout the rest of the week an eclectic mix of both Western and Eastern food is on offer, at both Ombak and Nio Beach Club.

Each of the resort’s villas have the bar replenished daily with soft drinks and beer and at the start of your stay your room is provided with three carafes full of spirits. Cocktails are available at both Ombak and Nio Beach Club, and once a week a beach party takes place and is always a sociable affair.

Spa Facilities

While there is no spa building at Nihi Sumba Island, there are plenty of private outdoor options where you can enjoy a spa treatment. Choose one of the private, open-air bales at Nihi Oka or dotted around the resort or enjoy a treatment in your villa.

Seminyak

Location: Seminyak

Seminyak is at the northernmost end of the 8 km stretch of beach that also includes Kuta and Legian. The area is known as the epicentre of entertainment, dining, fashion and shopping, as well as home to world-famous boutique hotels and villas. The sea here is fantastic for surfing, which, as a consequence, means it is not great for swimming, but there are flagged areas where you can swim and bodyboard (many hotels have free boards), and all the hotels that we recommend in the area have swimming pools.

The sunsets from this strip of beach are world famous, and there are a host of excellent spots to watch from, whether in a designer bar, from your hotel balcony, on a towel on the beach, or simply walking in the surf.

Samaya Seminyak

Accommodation: Samaya Seminyak

Situated on the quiet side of Seminyak Beach, and bordered by the Indian Ocean, the Samaya Seminyak is set within lush tropical gardens, only five minutes' walk from the stylish restaurants and boutique shops of Seminyak.

The 18 garden pool villas command a premier location behind the fashionable Seminyak beach, and are situated within 20,000 sq m of tropical gardens, and all boast a private plunge pool.

The 19 royal courtyard villas are located across the street from the main part of the hotel. Each has its own private swimming pool, at least 11 m in length, and a generous green outdoor garden, complimented with a wooden gazebo, which may double as daybed or intimate private dining area.

The larger four royal pavilions each have a private pool, elegant four poster bed, dining area, Balinese bale or gazebo and Jacuzzi. All 'royal' rooms contain a complimentary minibar (excluding alcoholic beverages), bottle of sparkling wine on arrival, and free laundry service.

The Samaya's facilities include a spa, restaurants, fitness centre, bar, tropical gardens, and an Olympic size swimming pool, facing the Indian Ocean, with 180 degree views along the sandy beaches.

The Breeze beachside restaurant and bar is one of Seminyak's most famous, and completes the experience, serving a variety of international and local cuisine, with uninterrupted views of the stunning Balinese sunset over the Indian Ocean.

The resort has a breakfast anytime, anywhere concept, which means exactly as described; you can choose to eat your breakfast at any time, anywhere in the resort.
