The fact that the Bauer Palladio used to be a convent is obvious from the moment you step through the modest doorway attached to the façade of the adjoining church. Complete with its own cloistered courtyard and extensive flower gardens, the hotel extends on either side of the church. In the gardens you’ll find secluded herb beds and pleasant walkways. Another highlight of the property is the excellent spa adjacent to the main building with a relaxation room that overlooks the waters of St Mark’s Basin.
Rooms at the Palladio are either in the main convent building or one of two more modern annexes in the gardens – Domus or Conventino. All rooms are of a good size, with air-conditioning, Wi-Fi and a TV, and some display features of the original convent. The bathrooms are modern and spacious, the majority of which feature a shower and bath. Most rooms offer views either over the central courtyard or gardens, although there are some rooms in the main building that offer wonderful views across the water of St Mark’s Basin.
The peaceful island of Giudecca is a residential area where many Venetians live meaning there are far fewer tourists than other areas. The front of the property looks across the water to St Mark’s, which is accessible in about 15 minutes by the hotel’s water taxi shuttle, making it well located for exploring, but removed enough to offer a thoroughly different atmosphere.
Food and Drink
Breakfast is served in a light-filled dining room decorated with frescoes, or on the courtyard terrace in summer. There’s also an additional dining room that offers an à la carte lunch and dinner menu. Giudecca has few restaurants so you may wish to make your way to Venice itself in the evening.
Facilities and Activities
One of the few hotels in Venice with gardens and open space in which to relax. There is a lovely spa complete with a number of massage rooms as well as a couples’ treatment room. The highlight is the relaxation room with stunning views across the water to St Mark’s.
A lovely, quiet option away from the crowds and bustle of downtown Venice. If you want to explore the city at a slower, more relaxed pace, the Palladio is an excellent choice.
