Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort

Tastefully restrained yet stylish and luxurious, this resort is set on a rocky outcrop overlooking one of southern Sri Lanka's most beautiful beaches. It's an exclusive hideaway with a wide range of facilities but offers great value for money.

Carved out from a mature coconut plantation and offering beautiful views of the Indian Ocean, the Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle is an extremely tranquil place. From the hotel's contemporary design to the highly polished service there's great attention to detail and guests are very well looked after. There's a good choice of dining options with Italian, Mediterranean, Sri Lankan and international cuisine and the chance to dine on a cliff edge, on the shoreline or by the pool. You can learn to cook local dishes on a Spice Spoons cookery course or join a tasting session in the wine cellar.

The hotel overlooks a secluded beach that offers good swimming, though there is also a wonderful 25 m (82 ft) pool, a spa and dedicated children's and teens' clubs. Take a trip to the nearby town of Tangalle for an insight into local life. It's a sleepy place with an old world charm and local restaurants serving fiery hot dishes.

The 152 rooms and pool villas here are understated yet refined with elegant decor, custom-made furniture and plenty of luxurious touches such as wine humidors and coffee machines as standard. Pool villas are larger and offer private plunge pools and gardens.

Yala National Park

During colonial rule, Yala National Park’s plains and forests were a hunting ground, but now they’re home to a healthy leopard population as well a diverse range of colourful birdlife, elephants, crocodiles, sloth bears and spotted deer as well as other animals. A protected area, Yala is one of Sri Lanka's biggest national parks.

A luxurious resort nestled between Yala National Park and the Indian Ocean coastline, Chena Huts has just 14 'huts', each with a spacious deck, plunge pool and views of the surrounding landscape and ocean. The nearby saline lake is popular with bird life while elephants saunter out of the jungle to visit the beach and turtles lay their eggs on the coastline.

Our opinion

This luxurious resort has a beautiful beach and a range of rooms and villas that are great for both families and couples. To complete the options, the poolside bar is open until sunset for cocktails and snacks while traditional high tea is served in the lobby lounge each afternoon. The hotel can also arrange private dining in a choice of intimate settings.

Yala National Park

Location: Yala National Park

A small information point introduces you to the park, which is home to one of the highest densities of leopard in the world. Elephants can easily be seen by the water’s edge between October and May, while waterbirds pick their way through the shallows and crocodiles bask in the sun.
