Marktgasse Hotel

Marktgasse Hotel

Zürich, Switzerland

The Marktgasse Hotel provides a historic stay in the heart of Zürich’s old town. Its 600-year-old building stands out among the shops and cafés due to its bright-white façade and periwinkle shutters. The renovated interior is bright and modern, while retaining some of its original features such as fresco paintings on the lobby walls and parquet flooring in the rooms.

You can spend time in the hotel’s library and peruse the books lining the bright-red shelves, or walk two minutes to the nearby spa and fitness suite and take advantage of the Turkish bath, pool and mud room. There’s a contemporary café with outdoor seating, as well as a fine-dining restaurant run by a three-Michelin-star chef.

The hotel's 39 rooms range in size from small doubles to the spacious Marktgasse Suite.

This is one of the best hotels in Zürich’s old town. We love its central location and the building’s long history, which gives it interesting features like original oak parquet flooring and stucco on walls.

The Small Double, Medium Double and Large Double rooms have a minimalist style with bright walls and comfortable beds, while the more generously sized Historic Doubles have individual period features. Junior Suites are slightly more spacious, with seating areas as well as the sleeping area, and one has a rooftop terrace with a large balcony overlooking Zürich. The Marktgasse Suite offers the most space, with a separate living room that you can close off from the bedroom.

All rooms and suites have air conditioning, Wi-Fi and a TV.

Marktgasse Hotel is situated on a quiet street in the midst of Zürich’s old town. You’ll be just a few minutes’ walk from the Limmat River, Lake Zürich and the main train station. The Kunsthaus, Schauspielhaus, Opera House and Tonhalle are also within walking distance, in addition to the plentiful shops, cafés and restaurants.

Food and drink

  • The hotel’s fine-dining restaurant, IGNIV Zürich, is helmed by three-Michelin-star chef Andreas Caminada.
  • The hotel also has a café, delish - la pinseria, which serves a variety of breakfast options, pastries, cocktails, wines and local beers. There's also outdoor patio seating.

Family room available, with extra beds in the suite categories.

Facilities and activities

  • Guests at the Marktgasse can use a nearby spa and fitness club.
  • There is a small salon and library.

Two suites are wheelchair accessible and the hotel has an elevator to access all areas. However, the hotel is built on a hill of cobblestones so external access could be more challenging.
