The Tides is located on a secluded and idyllic stretch of coastline near to the village of Ushongo, an attractive coastal village about 12 km south of Pangani. The lodge is situated on a fabulous and practically deserted beach and it is a superb little hideaway — discovered by very few. The Tides is a friendly lodge with a low key atmosphere.
Set along the beach are seven pretty and spacious bandas as well as two bigger bandas which are used as a honeymoon suite and a family house. Each has rustic makuti-thatch roofs, Swahili furniture and lovely verandas. There are double and twin rooms with fans at the end of the bed to keep you cool and all have en suite bathrooms. The larger family house has two bedrooms, one bathroom, a living area and large veranda. Finally there is the Upepo suite, set over two floors which serves as the honeymoon suite. Downstairs is a veranda, large lounge and spacious shower room, and upstairs is the master bedroom with king-sized bed and balcony with superb sea views.
There is a rustic beach bar situated right on the beach, a small shop, and a swimming pool set among tropical gardens. The restaurant adjoins the bar and specialises in seafood, bought fresh each day from the local fishing dhows (other meals can easily be arranged, do advise your specialist if you have any dietary requirements or preferences so we can forewarn the lodge).
Activities that can be arranged from the Tides include snorkel trips to the nearby Maziwe Island atoll, game fishing in the Pemba Channel, as well as windsurfing and kayaking. A variety of other activities can also be arranged through a local community tourism project in Pangani including walking tours of Pangani town, sunset cruises up the Pangani River, cycling tours of the coastline and surrounding sisal plantations.
