A three-hour drive from Gyantse, Shigatse is home to the Tashilhunpo Monastery.
This former seat of the Panchen Lama is famed for its striking buildings, including the Maitreya Chapel — dominated by a 26-metre statue of the Future Buddha — and the Tomb of the Fourth Panchen Lama.
