Mahu Whenua

Mahu Whenua

An indulgent lodge nestled in a sprawling estate, Mahu Whenua combines opulent seclusion with easy-to-access convenience. The lodge’s vast grounds encompass four adjoining high-country sheep stations and include green valleys, towering mountains and native bush and forests, giving you the feeling of a remote escape. However, it’s easy to find and located just a 30-minute drive from Wanaka. We can also arrange for a helicopter to take you to the lodge.

Each of the suites boasts either a king or a king-split bed, as well as an en suite bathroom and free Wi-Fi. Many of the rooms also have uninterrupted views of the surrounding mountain ranges.

Guests can relax on the front porch, play a game of billiards, or relax by the hot tub and pool. The hotel’s staff can also arrange a variety of activities, including horse riding, mountain biking and hiking.

There are four Ridgeline Suites to choose from at Mahu Whenua. Two suites, the Tui and the Keruru, are situated in the main homestead and have king beds, en suite bathrooms and uninterrupted views over Lake Wanaka and the surrounding mountain ranges.

The Weka and Pukeko bot sit in a cottage that is situated just a two-minute walk from the main house. They have a more self-contained setup, with king-sized beds, en suite bathrooms, small kitchenette, washer and dryer, and views over the Motutapu Valley, the farmland and stables. All rooms benefit from the same access to the homestead including two dining areas, library, media and games room and the swimming pool and spa.

The hotel’s name means ‘heal the land’ and it is set on a huge private eco-sanctuary nestled amid sky-scraping mountain, rolling hills and native bushland and forests. It’s located just a 20-minute drive from Wanaka and 90 minutes from Queenstown. You can also take a short, scenic helicopter ride to either Wanaka or Queenstown airport.

Food and drink

Due to the isolated nature of the property, all stays include a breakfast in the farmhouse kitchen. Lunch can be provided in the form of a picnic if you have activities on the farm. In the evening, you’ll enjoy an à la carte dinner with wine pairings from their chefs, who use the best produce from New Zealand. During your stay, you’ll also have the chance to enjoy pre-dinner canapes as well as morning and afternoon tea at the homestead.

Facilities and activities

At Mahu Whenua, you can relax in the outdoor heated swimming and spa pools or take a walk over the lodge’s 55,000 acres. Your hosts can suggest the best walking paths over the land and arrange heli-hikes to the more remote and challenging spots. You can also book guided horse riding, Central Otago wine tours, 4x4 farm tours, mountain biking, fishing or a helicopter experience for a new perspective over the countryside.

Our opinion

A stunning lodge that is perfect to relax and take in the surrounding scenery or to do adventurous activities.
