A contemporary boutique hotel right on the waterfront in Hobart, MACq 01 is the first of its kind and dedicated to telling stories of the past throughout its rooms and halls. The hotel is named after the shipping shed that formerly occupied the site, and the warriors, convicts, traders, hunters and explorers who passed through Hobart are all remembered here, as are the sea-going Mouheneenner, the Aboriginal Tasmanians.
A stay brings the long and complex history of the island to life and each of the 114 themed rooms is inspired by a specific Tasmanian character, with the decor and furnishings reflecting their personality and story. Spacious, bright and stylish, the rooms all have balconies, and those overlooking the waterfront offer some of the best views in the city.
The public spaces are equally generous in size with large windows, high ceilings and sleek styling. The Old Wharf Restaurant overlooks the waterfront and has a seafood focus, while the Story Bar is more intimate. The hotel also has a gym and a team of resident storytellers who offer free guided tours of the waterfront and city for guests.

Rooms
Each of the spacious rooms at the hotel is inspired by a Tasmanian character and the decor reflects their personality traits in the large-scale images mounted behind each bed. Some rooms are more quirky and vibrant, others more restrained and refined, but all are bright, spacious and contemporary with a predominantly neutral palette, large windows, and sleek, designer style. Each room has a balcony; opt for a view over the Derwent Estuary if you can. All rooms have a flat-screen TV, coffee machine and free Wi-Fi, while the Luxury Waterfront Suites have separate dining areas, open fireplaces and butler service.
Location
The hotel is set in the historic Hobart waterfront overlooking the Derwent Estuary. Lively Salamanca Place with its many restaurants, cafés, bars and shops is a ten-minute walk away. It’s a five-minute walk to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and 20 minutes on foot to historic Battery Point.
Food and drink
A generous buffet breakfast is served each morning with homemade breads and pastries, organic yoghurts and fresh fruit, while eggs, waffles, omelettes and meats can be ordered from the menu. For lunch and dinner, the Old Wharf Restaurant has a focus on seafood and offers views of the waterfront fishermen and cray boats from the large windows. The modern Australian menu makes the most of local Tasmanian produce. The hotel’s Story Bar is decorated with the front pages of old newspapers, continuing the storytelling theme, and serves everything from local craft beers to artisan whisky.

The hotel has a gym and personal trainers can be on hand to help on request. In-room massages can be arranged and staff are happy to advise guests on good walking, running or hiking routes nearby.
