  • Arrive at Calcutta Airport today where your driver will meet you and transfer you to your hotel to settle in, rest, and recover from your journey.

  • Awaking refreshed and ready to explore, meet your guide after breakfast and head out to explore Calcutta's Dalhousie Square district. Gandhi held a lifelong fascination with this capital of British India. After your morning walking tour, relax at your hotel, enjoy lunch and then meet your guide for a fascinating look at College Street, an intellectual hotspot. Absorb the area on a gentle stroll and then enjoy a coffee with a professor of Political Science whilst discussing Gandhian philosophy.

  • Enjoy a leisurely breakfast this morning, before a guided visit to the Victoria Memorial and Indian Museum. After lunch, visit the bustling Malik Ghat Flower Market, take a ferry across the Hugli River to the Sovabazar Ghat and admire the magnificent Howrah Bridge. Finish your day with a look around the Pareshnath Jain temple, one of the holiest in Calcutta.

  • Today you will fly to Pune, a place of a six-year imprisonment for Mahatma Gandhi. Check into your hotel and freshen up on arrival, before joining your guide for a visit to the Aga Khan Palace, Gandhi's luxurious prison. Relax at your hotel this evening.

  • Moving on from Pune this morning, you'll be driven to Mumbai for a fascinating look at architecture and then tomorrow, Gandhi's story here. This afternoon your guide will explore with you on foot, visiting various architectural specimens including the Indo-Saracenic Gateway of India, neo-Gothic synagogues, Renaissance revival buildings, British Colonial architecture and the largest number of Art Deco buildings outside of Miami. You'll finish your architectural adventure at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Victoria Terminus building. We'll provide our favorite restaurant recommendations for you in the city tonight in your travel pack.

  • After yesterday's architectural theme, today you will look into the significance of Mumbai for Mahatma Gandhi. Visit Gandhi's home and place of work, then move on to the Baug, location of his first speech to Mumbai, and then the August Kranti Maiden, where Gandhi began the Quit India Movement — a fascinating look into the life and work of this great man. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure to explore Mumbai further or simply rest and relax at your hotel.

  • Enjoy a leisurely morning, you'll then be transferred to the airport to fly onward to Ahmedabad. Gandhi made his way here from Rajkot via Bullock cart in 1887 to take his entrance exams for Bombay University. After a busy few days, there is nothing more to do than relax and enjoy the facilities at your hotel. If you feel like getting out and about, an excellent recommendation is the Law Garden Night Market, the perfect spot to pick up some Gujarati handicrafts in the early evening.

  • This morning, take a guided heritage walk around the city of Ahmedabad. Your guide will be delighted to show you the most interesting sites and regale you with history and stories about the city. This afternoon is at leisure, then enjoy a traditional Gujarati Thali dinner at Agashiye Restaurant, within the House of Manga Girdhardas hotel.

  • Prepare for an assault on your senses today as you fly to one of the holiest cities in India. Varanasi was a special place for Gandhi and is the destination for millions of pilgrims each year who come to bathe in the River Ganges and say farewell to their loved ones. You'll be met on arrival and transferred to your hotel before visiting Sarnath, a major Buddhist center. Buddha delivered his first sermon here. Tonight, undertake the Death and Rebirth walk, an experience which takes you through Banaras at Mahashramstana, the cremation ground of Shiva.

  • Early morning today, take a boat ride on the River Ganges to see the ghats from the water. Observe people performing their morning rituals from a respectful distance and admire the sunrise over the river. Return to the hotel for breakfast before heading out again for a half day tour of Varanasi with your guide. Rest this afternoon, as you'll take to the waters again tonight to observe the Aarti ceremony on the ghats. The night-time here is starkly different to the early morning rituals and it's fascinating to see both.
