Hastings House is a magnificent 11th century-style English manor house, situated right on the shore of Salt Spring Island's peaceful Ganges Harbour. Built in 1939, it's set among mature cedar trees and beautifully landscaped gardens filled with flowers. A patio area overlooks the water, where you can watch boats come and go, while the spa is tucked away in a barn surrounded by trees, offering massages and a variety of treatments.
The property's individually styled suites are scattered across seven buildings, in addition to two suites in the manor house itself. In the evening, guests are invited to gather in the main house for cocktails and conversation before dinner in the Fine Dining Room, which is regarded as one of British Columbia's best restaurants. Here you can join locals and fellow guests in sampling chef Kauer's exquisite meals, prepared with locally sourced produce wherever possible. There's also The Bistro, a more casual restaurant set in the manor's former living room and offering an à la carte menu. The award-winning wine list at both restaurants is extensive and wines can be paired with your meal by your server.
OUR OPINION:
Guests can be assured of a warm welcome at this peaceful Gulf Island retreat. Despite its close proximity to Ganges, it's a tranquil haven for those celebrating a special occasion or seeking a relaxing escape.

Rooms
Each of the guest suites has its own decor and history, with most having either a wood-burning or gas fireplace and a private living area with views of the harbour and forest. Several different room types are available at Hastings House, ranging from spacious rooms for up to two guests, to multi-room detached cottages that especially appeal to families and larger groups. While there are two suites in the main manor house (one of which offers two bedrooms), others are located in the estate's stylishly renovated barn or in separate buildings across the estate. Some have private decks overlooking the harbour and sofa beds for accommodating additional guests. Wi-Fi, TVs and mini fridges are included in all suites.
Location
Set back from Ganges Harbour, Hastings House offers an elegant retreat from the bustle of Salt Spring Island's main hub, while still offering easy access to the town's restaurants, art galleries, and artisan shops, which are around 15 minutes away on foot. From the hotel, guests are able to watch boats and seaplanes arriving into the harbour, in addition to enjoying the property's beautifully maintained gardens, which are set within a forested backdrop.
Food and drink
A daily wake-up hamper is delivered to guests' doors in the morning and includes tea, coffee and muffins. Breakfast is then served in the restaurant, with hot and continental options available. Afternoon tea is also included in your stay, served every day at 3:30pm.
For dinner, you can choose the property's Fine Dining restaurant, though this requires advance booking as it's regarded as one of the best in western Canada. Alternatively, head to The Bistro which serves more casual fare, with ingredients sourced from the estate's gardens and local Gulf Island farms.
Facilities and activities
There is an excellent spa at Hastings House, offering a variety of treatments including massages, facials and thalassotherapy. Do note, however, that reservations need to be made well in advance.
Accessibility
With many small hills and unpaved tracks, we would not recommend this property for our disabled guests.
