Lord Elgin

Lord Elgin

Ottawa, Canada

Set in a historic building in the heart of downtown Ottawa, the Lord Elgin hotel sits directly across from Confederation Park and close to the National Arts Centre. The hotel opened in 1941 and is popular with local politicians and businessmen as well as international visitors.

Service is discreet and the decor in the public areas is traditional. The rooms are more modern in style with a comfortable but corporate design in neutral tones. Tall picture windows offer views over the nearby park and the Rideau Canal or the surrounding streets. Guests in the front rooms can watch soldiers march past on their way to the Changing of the Guard each morning. Each room has high-speed internet access, a TV with in-room films, and an en suite bathroom with a shower.

The Grill 41 Restaurant serves a traditional menu of steakhouse and seafood dishes, with breakfast served from a wide-ranging buffet or an à la carte menu. Hotel guests can also enjoy the onsite lap pool with adjoining whirlpool, sauna and gym.

OUR OPINION:

This traditional hotel has a decadent lobby, comfortable rooms and excellent service but the rooms sizes vary and bathrooms can be compact. We loved watching the soldiers marching past to the Changing of the Guard across the road in Confederation Park.

Rooms

The handsome but business-like rooms at the Lord Elgin are decorated in neutral tones with pale walls, dark woods and chocolate browns. Tall windows overlook Ottawa's Rideau Canal or Confederation Park and touches of Art Deco design add a hint of period style. Pillow-top beds and feather pillows ensure a good night's sleep, while the high ceilings offer a sense of space. All rooms have high speed wireless internet (basic Wi-Fi is free but there's a charge for streaming), large-screen HDTVs and a mini fridge, while the bathrooms are well equipped with walk in showers.

Location

The hotel sits on the corner of Elgin and Laurier, two of Ottawa's main streets, just a few blocks from Parliament Hill and the National Arts Centre. Every morning soldiers march past on their way to the Changing of the Guard. The leafy Confederation Park is just across the street with the Rideau Canal just beyond it. The ByWard Market is a 15-minute walk away as is the National Gallery of Canada.

Food and drink

The Grill 41 Restaurant & Bar is classically styled in a rather staid fashion. The evening menu features a selection of traditional steakhouse and seafood dishes with some Asian influences. Breakfast ranges from a full buffet to à la carte dishes such as pancake stacks, steak and eggs, smoked salmon bagels and protein smoothies, while lunch sees burgers and sandwiches on offer. There's also a Starbucks in the lobby if you want to have a quick breakfast before leaving.

Facilities and activities

The hotel has a gym and a small pool with a hot tub, as well as a Starbucks in the lobby.
