Places to stay in Japan vary from Western-style international and business hotels of all standards through to charming ryokan inns offering unique, warm hospitality and an authentically Japanese experience. Ryokans can range from homely guesthouses to the sublime sophistication of Kyoto’s finest establishments, but all offer far more than just a place to lay your head for the night and we recommend that at least one night is spent in one during your trip. There are pockets on some of the southern islands where options are scarce, but we'll always find you the best option for you, although it may be lacking in character.
