When is the best time to visit Kyrgyzstan?

Kyrgyzstan’s position in the heart of Central Asia means it’s continental in climate, with hot, dry summers and bitterly cold winters.

The summer months of July and August are extremely hot. Though this heat can be uncomfortable, this is when the country’s bazaars are at their most lively. It’s also the ideal season to explore the country’s mountainous areas and hiking trails that are out of bounds at other times of the year (the high-altitude winters linger long, and bar travel through high mountain passes).

Summer, for me, is the best time to be in Kyrgyzstan (more specifically, June or July, as you avoid the large Russian tour groups who sometimes visit during their school summer break). Staying in a yurt is much more peaceful (and less chilly) at this time of year. The meadows are carpeted in flowers, and it’s a good time to go walking in the mountains.

Month-by-month guide to travelling in Kyrgyzstan

Peak Pobeda, Tian Shan mountain range

Visiting Kyrgyzstan in January - March

Winter descends on Kyrgyzstan and temperatures plummet as snow blocks some high mountain passes, making several areas unreachable. We advise against travel in these months.
