The Datai Langkawi

Our rating: Deluxe

Rooms

There are lots of room choices, so you can find the perfect room type. All rooms are designed in a blend of contemporary elegance and local Malay style, and have all the facilities you would expect from a luxury hotel, including air conditioning, satellite TV, minibar and Wi-Fi. All rooms are spacious, en suite and have outdoor seating areas. Please note the plug sockets fit multiple plugs, including the UK standard three pin square plugs.

Please be aware that rooms and villas have balcony balustrades which are of a design that could present a hazard to young children. Families with children under 12 cannot be accommodated due to this.

Location

The Datai is located on Langkawi, the largest island off the western coast of Malaysia. The hotel is surrounded by ancient primary rainforest, rolling down to a spectacular, long, white sand beach, with views of the tiny tropical islands that are dotted around the bay.

The hotel is approximately 40 minutes from the airport, and 60 minutes from the main town, Kuah. Its relative isolation means immaculate beaches and unspoilt rainforest, brimming with wildlife.

Food and drink

Five restaurants provide a good choice of dining options.

The Pavilion, elevated on a platform in the rainforest, serves authentic Thai cuisine in an open-air setting while fine dining is available in The Dining Room. The Beach Club and Beach Bar offer a lovely setting overlooking the water, while the Lobby Lounge offers cocktails and snacks with spectacular views of the Andaman Sea. The Gulai House is the hotel's signature restaurant and serves superb Malay and Indian curries and specialities.

Families

For families, it is worth noting that children under 12 are not permitted in the hotel lobby lounge after 8pm, and the main pool is for guests aged 16 and over. Children are welcome to use the beach pool, which is more suitable for younger swimmers.

Local excursions

The hotel's resident naturalists take guests on walks most days through the rainforest. This is free of charge, takes place at 8am and 7pm, and is highly recommended, offering excellent opportunities to spot local wildlife. Mangrove tours, jungle trekking and mountain biking can also be organised, to explore the island further.

The Datai Langkawi is one of Audley's favourite hotels in Malaysia. It offers laid-back luxury, and its winning combination of rainforest and beach makes it a really magical hotel. This is a perfect choice for those wishing to enjoy refined, yet understated, five star luxury, ideal for a honeymoon or relaxing beach break.
