Anderssons at Ongava

Anderssons at Ongava

Etosha National Park, Namibia

Renovated in early 2019, Anderssons at Ongava has set a high benchmark for ecotourism. A busy waterhole is the central feature of the lodge, overlooked by the communal areas including an open-air dining room, spacious lounge, curio shop, infinity pool and library. Beside the waterhole is an underground photographic hide, a lovely spot to spend a couple of hours with a camera, binoculars and bird book to identify the many species that pass through to drink and bathe.

Set slightly apart from the main lodge is the Ongava Research Centre which hosts some of the continent's leading scientists and researchers. Guests are welcome to peruse the exhibitions or join discussions with resident naturalists as they strive to lead the way in conservation education. Other activities from Anderssons include guided game drives on the reserve, and also in Etosha National Park, specialised birdwatching, guided nature walks and rhino tracking.

OUR OPINION:

There is a strong emphasis on visitors immersing themselves in conservation solutions through involvement with the visiting researchers, so Anderssons is suited to people with a passion for the future of Africa's ecosystems. The rooms offer a luxurious retreat and the Ongava Reserve has some fantastic animal populations, so this lodge has multi-level appeal.

Rooms

Eight luxury suites have a contemporary design, constructed entirely from natural resources and intended to blend into their surrounding environment. Air conditioning, indoor and outdoor showers and modern luxuries are all standard furnishings throughout, and each room has a vast private deck that offers panoramic views across the reserve. One of these rooms is designated as a family unit, built with interconnecting suites, each with their own entrance and bathroom.

Location

Set on the southern edge of Etosha National Park, guests of Anderssons at Ongava benefit from easy exploration of both the national park and the 300 sq km private Ongava Reserve. The lodge is easily reached by road, or by light aircraft to Ongava’s private airstrip.

Food and drink

Anderssons at Ongava offers indoor and outdoor dining. Guests may find themselves enjoying a drink with the local animals, as they sip from the camp’s central waterhole close to the dining area.

Families

Children of all ages are welcomed at Anderssons, though private vehicles must be booked for those under 12 to join safaris. Some walking activities may only be offered to older children.

Facilities and activities

Guests can enjoy plenty of activities from Anderssons, with game drives and walking safaris leaving each day. There is also the opportunity to join a walk to see the rhino, or to watch wildlife from the photographic hide. The Ongava Research Centre is located just off the camp’s boundary, and guests can visit to learn more about the local wildlife.

Environmental and social responsibility

The Ongava Research Centre was created to ensure the future of the endangered species of the area. Staff here work hard to maintain the wild habitat and learn more about the creatures in their care, with particular attention to conserving the populations of rare white and black rhino.
