A secluded escape set on a rocky headland between two quiet sandy beaches, Saman Villas is a glorious place to unwind. Its understated but luxurious design blends local charm with Western conveniences to create the ultimate Sri Lankan getaway.
Big enough to have all the facilities you might need yet small enough for an intimate atmosphere, Saman Villas is a wonderfully relaxed place where the sound of the sea accompanies you wherever you go. The hotel is set in lush gardens and has a large infinity pool with a bar where you can enjoy the vivid sunsets with a cocktail in hand. There is a choice of dining options with decks and ornate private dining pavilions dotted around the grounds, or opt for the main restaurant with its menu of local specialities, seafood and international favourites. The lovely Sahana Spa is set in a tropical water garden and offers a range of treatments but if you would prefer more action, diving, surfing and fishing are all available nearby. You can also cycle or walk to ancient temples, traditional markets and tropical gardens and forests, or venture into nearby Bentota to try out a variety of restaurants.
The 27 extremely spacious suites have whitewashed walls, teak floors, handmade fabrics and luxurious outdoor bathrooms. Superior suites command glorious views from their large balconies while Deluxe Suites are even larger with garden terraces and in some cases, private pools.
Before the beach - 4 days
A lush area of small villages, serene temples and dense vegetation, the countryside around Galle is ideal for exploring by bike. Learn about ancient village traditions such as mask making and toddy tapping - the collection of sap from the bud of palm flowers to make palm wine. Visit a tea factory or head for the southern coast to see Sri Lanka's renowned stilt fishermen at work. You can also take a glass-bottomed boat trip over the reefs of Hikkaduwa, go whale watching between December and April or explore Galle itself, a fortified city with a fascinating colonial history and many boutiques.The seven individually styled suites at Kahanda Kanda feature canopy beds, carved wood panelling, antiques and rich fabrics. With a small spa, infinity pool and gorgeous setting overlooking a lake and tea plantation, it's very hard to leave.

Set on a rocky outcrop overlooking two golden beaches it is easy to explore the local area and enjoy unspoilt beaches from the hotel.
The property is predominantly aimed at couples and therefore does not accept young children under the age of 11. All rooms hold a maximum of two people.
Saman Villas has a great location for those who would like to relax in a peaceful environment whilst still having the opportunity to explore locally.
The hotel sits on a rocky headland between two long stretches of golden sand. Although the location is very quiet and secluded, all the facilities of nearby Bentota are just five kilometres away allowing guests easy access to a range of restaurants and bars.
This collection of superb villa style accommodation will appeal most to those seeking peace, stylish surroundings and a high standard of service. Although superbly equipped, there is little organised entertainment and is best for those looking to relax and switch off.
There are just 27 suites, each very spacious with incredible sea views, iPod docking stations, DVD players and air conditioning. Some also offer a private pool.
The superior suites are approximately 65m2 and are set on the top floor of two storey buildings with beautiful sea views and a balcony.
Larger than the Superior suites at around 76m2, the Deluxe Suites are on the ground floor with a spacious terrace which leads to a private garden and outdoor rain shower.
Deluxe suite with pool
The Deluxe Suites with Pool are similar to the Deluxe Suites but slightly larger at just over 80m2 and with the added benefit of a private pool with views over the Indian Ocean, as well as a beautiful indoor and outdoor bathroom.
Grand deluxe suite
The Grand Deluxe Suite is just over 80m2 and set on the ground floor at the far south end of the building. The sleeping area opens onto a private pool overlooking the ocean and a large deck with sun loungers and a dining area.
Saman Villas Suite
The largest Villa available the Saman Villa is set over two floors and offers superb levels of luxury. On the ground floor there is a spacious living area which opens out onto a large terrace and private garden and there is a lap pool set within a walled area at the back of the suite. The bedroom also features a balcony set on the first floor with dressing room and butler service throughout.

Activities, diving & excursions
The hotel’s infinity pool overlooks the ocean and there is also an indoor Jacuzzi and fitness centre but simply relaxing and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful setting are key here.
If you would like to be more active, bicycle hire is available for exploring the local area and water sports can be arranged for a charge at Bentota Watersports Centre a short drive away.
Although the hotel does not offer its own dive centre, there are local companies that can operate trips for a fee.
Food & drink
The alfresco Terrace Restaurant is located in the centre of the resort and offers fresh seafood and international dishes. The hotel also offers a number of intimate, private dining options including poolside pavilions overlooking the Indian Ocean.
The Sahana Spa is an excellent option for those wishing to enjoy an intimate and relaxing spa experience. It offers a secluded location with just two couples treatment villas creating a peaceful atmosphere. Before a treatment, guests have access to the Jacuzzi, floral bath, daybed and dining area, before selecting from a range of treatments including massages, facials, manicures and pedicures.
The tranquil atmosphere of the fortress area of Galle belies its turbulent past. The fort was constructed by the Portuguese, later fell to the Dutch and was finally occupied by the British.
Its location on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka put it firmly on the trade route between the East and Europe, and each wave of settlers built their own churches and mansions.
Visit the World Heritage Site
Now a World Heritage Site, it is a lovely place to wander and explore the small shops, while outside the fortress area Galle is a bustling city with plenty of sandy coves nearby.
You can either stay in Galle and visit these areas or stay in a beach retreat and make expeditions into the historic centre.
Accommodation: Kahanda Kanda
Kahanda Kanda is one of Southern Sri Lanka's newest boutique hotels. The property is situated in a 48,562-square-metre plantation near the coast, 15 kilometres from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Galle, and overlooks Kogalla Lake. The villa was built in 2000 as a private home and has gradually expanded to offer seven air-conditioned suites with panoramic views of palm-fringed jungle and tea plantations. Each room has stylish, spacious interiors, while the comfortably furnished dining and living pavillions are decorated with antiques and are separated by lily ponds. The terrace next to the 20-metre infinity pool offers the opportunity for sunbathing while mountain biking, water sports and tea factory visits are available for the more energetic. The enigmatic owner and host, George Cooper, can advise on things to do, or leave you to your own devices to simply relax and enjoy your beautiful surroundings.

Board your overnight flight to Colombo.
Upon your arrival into Colombo you will be met and transferred by private vehicle to Kahanda Kanda, a beautiful, boutique hotel with only 7 suites set in a 12 acre plantation near Galle.
Today you will enjoy a private guided city tour around Galle, exploring the walled area and its narrow streets lined with colonial buildings.
Today you will be taken to a nearby Lowland Tea Estate around 45 minutes away from the hotel.
Today you will be picked up from the hotel and transferred by private vehicle to Saman Villas, a luxurious boutique retreat set on the coast.
This romantic resort has a beautifully relaxing setting and spacious suites so you may wish to simply enjoy your time at the resort. If you would like to explore a little why not take a scenic cycle tour across paddy fields, to the Katukoliha temple, past Dutch architectural houses, and down to the Dedduwa lake.
Enjoy a variety of water activities from the hotel including waterskiing, jet skiing, wake boarding and wind surfing.
If you are travelling between November and April you can book trips to see whales and dolphins.
