On the beach - 8 days

Saman Villas

A secluded escape set on a rocky headland between two quiet sandy beaches, Saman Villas is a glorious place to unwind. Its understated but luxurious design blends local charm with Western conveniences to create the ultimate Sri Lankan getaway.

Big enough to have all the facilities you might need yet small enough for an intimate atmosphere, Saman Villas is a wonderfully relaxed place where the sound of the sea accompanies you wherever you go. The hotel is set in lush gardens and has a large infinity pool with a bar where you can enjoy the vivid sunsets with a cocktail in hand. There is a choice of dining options with decks and ornate private dining pavilions dotted around the grounds, or opt for the main restaurant with its menu of local specialities, seafood and international favourites. The lovely Sahana Spa is set in a tropical water garden and offers a range of treatments but if you would prefer more action, diving, surfing and fishing are all available nearby. You can also cycle or walk to ancient temples, traditional markets and tropical gardens and forests, or venture into nearby Bentota to try out a variety of restaurants.

The 27 extremely spacious suites have whitewashed walls, teak floors, handmade fabrics and luxurious outdoor bathrooms. Superior suites command glorious views from their large balconies while Deluxe Suites are even larger with garden terraces and in some cases, private pools.

Before the beach - 4 days

Galle Region

A lush area of small villages, serene temples and dense vegetation, the countryside around Galle is ideal for exploring by bike. Learn about ancient village traditions such as mask making and toddy tapping - the collection of sap from the bud of palm flowers to make palm wine. Visit a tea factory or head for the southern coast to see Sri Lanka's renowned stilt fishermen at work. You can also take a glass-bottomed boat trip over the reefs of Hikkaduwa, go whale watching between December and April or explore Galle itself, a fortified city with a fascinating colonial history and many boutiques.

The seven individually styled suites at Kahanda Kanda feature canopy beds, carved wood panelling, antiques and rich fabrics. With a small spa, infinity pool and gorgeous setting overlooking a lake and tea plantation, it's very hard to leave.

Our opinion

This collection of superb villa style accommodation will appeal most to those seeking peace, stylish surroundings and a high standard of service. Although superbly equipped, there is little organised entertainment and is best for those looking to relax and switch off.

Activities, diving & excursions

The hotel’s infinity pool overlooks the ocean and there is also an indoor Jacuzzi and fitness centre but simply relaxing and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful setting are key here.

Spa Facilities

The Sahana Spa is an excellent option for those wishing to enjoy an intimate and relaxing spa experience. It offers a secluded location with just two couples treatment villas creating a peaceful atmosphere. Before a treatment, guests have access to the Jacuzzi, floral bath, day bed and dining area, before selecting from a range of treatments including massages, facials, manicures and pedicures.

Galle Region

Location: Galle

The tranquil atmosphere of the fortress area of Galle belies its turbulent past. The fort was constructed by the Portuguese, later fell to the Dutch and was finally occupied by the British.

Its location on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka put it firmly on the trade route between the East and Europe, and each wave of settlers built their own churches and mansions.

Visit the World Heritage Site

Now a World Heritage Site, it is a lovely place to wander and explore the small shops, while outside the fortress area Galle is a bustling city with plenty of sandy coves nearby.

You can either stay in Galle and visit these areas or stay in a beach retreat and make expeditions into the historic centre.

Kahanda Kanda

Accommodation: Kahanda Kanda

Kahanda Kanda is one of Southern Sri Lanka's newest boutique hotels. The property is situated in a 48,562-square-metre plantation near the coast, 15 kilometres from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Galle, and overlooks Kogalla Lake. The villa was built in 2000 as a private home and has gradually expanded to offer seven air-conditioned suites with panoramic views of palm-fringed jungle and tea plantations. Each room has stylish, spacious interiors, while the comfortably furnished dining and living pavillions are decorated with antiques and are separated by lily ponds. The terrace next to the 20-metre infinity pool offers the opportunity for sunbathing while mountain biking, water sports and tea factory visits are available for the more energetic. The enigmatic owner and host, George Cooper, can advise on things to do, or leave you to your own devices to simply relax and enjoy your beautiful surroundings.
