Odessa City Tour
Odessa City Tour, Ukraine
This introductory tour of Odessa will take in the main sites of the city, including the Potemkin steps, scene of the 1905 mutiny by sailors from the Battleship Potemkin, and setting for one of the most famous set pieces in cinematic history (from Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin).
You also see Odessa's magnificent opera house and other historic buildings of note. Felix Pototsky was a fabulously wealthy Polish count who gave his son and daughter-in-law this palace as a wedding gift. The slightly crumbling Pototsky palace now houses an impressive art collection.
Beneath the palace are a series of catacombs where the high-society of Odessa used to come in summer to escape the oppressive heat and live the high life - bathing in pools of wine and idling away the long summer days. There was also a tunnel from here that went down to the beach. Legend has it that the lady of the house conducted an affair with another of Odessa's nobleman via a tunnel from her palace to his. Your guide will show you down to the catacombs beneath the palace and tell you some of the fascinating history of the family.
