Ngoma Safari Lodge

Ngoma Safari Lodge

Chobe National Park, Botswana

Ngoma Safari Lodge has a striking position high on an escarpment. It has sweeping views over Chobe River and the surrounding floodplains, where elephant herds come to drink and fish eagles swoop to catch their prey.

There are lots of spaces where you can relax and take it all in, from the communal decking area, boma and pool, to your suite’s private veranda. The dining room and bar also overlooks the river and is open all day, with lunch and dinner menus giving you more choice than most safari camps.

The eight suites have floor-to-ceiling windows facing the river, along with plunge pools and both indoor and outdoor showers. Air conditioning and Wi-Fi are added luxuries rarely found on safari.

Situated in the Chobe Forest Reserve, the lodge offers morning, afternoon and evening game drives. Walking safaris are also possible, and boat trips along the river are an option year-round, getting you almost within splashing distance of elephant.

OUR OPINION:

The setting of this lodge is impressive enough, but we also like the privacy and luxury of its suites, the varied activities on offer, and the high quality of the food.

Rooms

The eight air-conditioned suites are set well apart from each other for privacy. They each have uninterrupted, far-reaching views over the river through floor-to-ceiling windows and from their paved veranda, which has its own plunge pool and loungers. High thatched ceilings amplify the space, and the wooden floors are decorated with patterned rugs. The large double beds are elegantly draped with mosquito nets, and two of the rooms can fit an additional single bed. An en suite bathroom is discretely positioned behind the main bedroom area, featuring a bathtub, twin sink and both indoor and outdoor showers.

Location

The lodge is situated in the Chobe Forest Reserve, which borders Chobe National Park to the west. Its elevated position overlooking the Chobe River and surrounding floodplains puts you in an excellent position for seeing game from your room or the communal decking area. Kasane is around an hour’s drive away.

Food and drink

Meals are served to individual tables either outside on the deck or in the main dining room. Expect a light early morning breakfast before your morning activity. You could take a packed lunch and stay out all day, or return to the lodge for a cooked lunch chosen from the lodge’s menu. A three-course dinner is served in the evening, with several options to choose from and a different menu offered each day.

Families

Children must be aged ten or over to stay here. Two of the suites can fit an additional bed for a third guest.

Facilities and activities

In addition to your suite’s plunge pool, the lodge’s main area has a communal pool with views over the floodplains. Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.

Activities from Ngoma include morning, afternoon and night drives in search of game including lion, elephant and giraffe, boat trips along the river where huge elephant herds come to drink, walking safaris where you can learn about the area’s more subtle wildlife inhabitants, and visits to a nearby village.

Environmental and social responsibility

The lodge has been built from natural materials and is operated in conjunction with the local community. Many of the staff are from nearby villages, and a proportion of the money from each stay is given to the local community, helping to provide educational and health facilities.
