Sango Safari Camp

Khwai Concession, Botswana

The scenery surrounding the camp is stunningly beautiful, with seasonal floodplains, open grasslands, riverine forests and dry woodlands. This in turn supports an excellent diversity of big game and birds, making safaris from Sango very rewarding.

The camp is named after the Sango family, who were some of the original inhabitants of the Khwai area and are now part-owners of the camp. The camp offers an intimate and relaxed environment, featuring an open plan lounge, bar and dining area under canvas with soft seating, local African décor and a dining area overlooking the bush. Dining is a communal affair, granting you the opportunity to chat with other guests and share stories of your safari experience.

Rooms

Sango is a basic, yet comfortable camp that accommodates up to 12 guests in six Meru-style tents. Each tent has an en suite with a toilet and open-air shower. They also feature mosquito nets, hand-crafted furniture and a deck, which makes the perfect place to sit and relax with a good book or some binoculars as you look out for the area's wonderful wildlife.

Location

Sango Safari Camp is situated in a shady spot overlooking the Khwai River, on the outskirts of the traditional village of Khwai and bordering Moremi Game Reserve.

Food and drink

Meals are eaten communally in the open-tented dining area, featuring local and international dishes. There's also a bar serving a variety of beverages, allowing you to sit back in the lounge or on the deck with a refreshing sundowner while taking in your wild surroundings.

Facilities and activities

As the camp is perched between the Moremi Game Reserve and private Khwai Concession, guests can enjoy open vehicle game drives, guided bush walks and night drives in both areas. Mokoro (a type of dugout canoe) trips are also possible when the water levels in the Delta are high.

In between game viewing, kick back in comfortable chairs on the deck while flicking through books about local game and birdlife, or cool off with a dip in the small pool. There's also the opportunity to visit the river bushmen of the nearby Khwai village on a cultural walk, enabling you to learn first-hand about the unique lifestyle and experiences that come from living and growing up in this wild region of Botswana. This also gives the local population the opportunity to interact with people from other cultures.

Environmental and social responsibility

Sango used renewable timber and canvas to build the rooms and dining area in order to minimize its impact on the environment. All furniture is hand-made to reduce long transportation of material and to employ people from the local community. The camp uses solar energy to power its electricity and heat its water, and has its own above-ground sewerage treatment plant which ensures that no pollutants enter the surrounding marshes and the river. Recycling is done wherever possible, and vegetables are sourced from the camp's own vegetable garden.

Local people are employed at the camp to ensure local communities benefit from the area's tourism. The camp also hosts children from local schools and educates them on conservation and tourism, even taking them on game drives just like regular guests.
