Planning your trip
Despite Croatia’s increasing popularity as a travel destination in Europe, we still apply our same tailor-made approach to designing your trip around unique experiences based on your interests and preferences. Your specialist, using their in-depth knowledge of the country, will guide you with how to make the most of your time. They’ll help you experience the best the country has to offer, while avoiding the crowds.
Croatian is the official language of Croatia, but English is widely spoken throughout the country, particularly with the younger generations, making conversation easy.
Food and Drink
Cuisine in Croatia might not enjoy the cachet of that in adjoining Italy, but the country's reputation for food is on the rise. A string of new gourmet experiences have raised the profile of regions like Istria and Kvarner.
Ingredients are mostly fresh and seasonal, and menu items can range from light fish dishes and seafood on the Dalmatian Coast to hearty lamb stews inland. Croatia is also making a name for its olive oil, which plays an integral part in many coastal dishes.
Croatia is also becoming a major contributor to the European wine scene, particularly its white wines (graševina and prošip) and the bold red plavac mali, made from grapes grown along the Dalmatian Coast. As state-run wineries return to family-owned enterprises, these vineyards offer you an authentic and relaxed wine experience.
Festivals & holidays
Croatia celebrates 13 public holidays throughout the calendar year. Many tie into the country's strong Roman Catholic influences, such as Three Kings Day, the Assumption of Mary, and Corpus Christi.
On top of official holidays, the country plays host to a wide variety of cultural events. Between the International Folklore Festival in Zagreb and Zadar's Night of the Full Moon, there are numerous events that showcase the country's rich history and lively personality.

Tipping isn’t always expected in Croatia, though it is common. In a restaurant, it’s usual to tip around 10% of the bill for good service.
For taxis, or at bars and cafés, rounding up the total (for example, 18 kuna to 20 kuna) is acceptable. Hotel staff don’t expect tips, but 10–20 kuna for help with luggage or housekeeping is appreciated.
Money and Expenses
Croatia’s currency is the kuna (HRK), whose value is loosely tied to the euro. You can buy kuna on arrival in Croatia or sometimes in advance at larger international banks.
Visa and Mastercard are accepted at most ATMs for cash withdrawals. While credit cards are accepted throughout most of the country, we advise carrying some kuna for smaller purchases.
The country calling code for Croatia is +385. While local calls are very reasonably priced, calling abroad from hotels can be quite expensive.
Complimentary Wi-Fi is commonly available, making video-calling the preferred option for outbound international calls. Alternatively, if you travel with an unlocked phone, you can buy a local SIM card with phone calls and data included at a reasonable cost. These SIM cards are available at mobile phone stores, department stores and some newsstands.
