Nkwichi Lodge

Nkwichi Lodge, Likoma Island & Mozambique Lakeshore, Malawi

Nkwichi Lodge is located on the Mozambique shores of Lake Malawi and is set on a beach that easily rivals the Indian Ocean beaches on the eastern side of the country.

The lodge takes its name from the local name for the beach, Mchenja Nkwichi, meaning squeaky sands referring to the squeak that the fine white sands make as you walk across the beach. The lodge is part of the Manda Wilderness project which was set up to create a nature reserve to protect this beautiful and remote part of Mozambique.

Nkwichi Lodge has been constructed by local staff from the nearby communities using only local and natural materials. Each of the six ensuite chalets is slightly different in style and are designed to blend in with the surroundings. They all offer spacious bedrooms with four-poster beds and mozzie net drapes.

The main lodge is a simple two level thatch-roof building with bar and dining area upstairs offering lovely views over the lake. There is also a lovely raised decking set in the boulders on the beach and this is another lovely venue for relaxing in a hammock or enjoying a meal.

Activities at Nkwichi range from complete relaxation on the beach, swimming and snorkeling to walks in the reserve and canoe trips to explore the stunning coastline. Guests are also very welcome to visit community projects such as the farming program and schools set up in neighboring villages.

      Likoma Island & Mozambique Lakeshore

We definitely recommend taking a stroll or a boat trip over to the "town" and visiting the huge St. Peter's Cathedral which was built in 1905 by missionaries

Watch the Local Choir & Dance Group

      Likoma Island & Mozambique Lakeshore

Kaya Mawa is frequently visited by a local choir and Malipenga and Chioda dancing teams. The Malipenga (male) and Chioda (female) dance team are an integral part of Malawi culture. Feathers in caps, socks pulled up to the knees, the haunting trumpeting of the calabash tells the story of colonial days gone by.
