Zomba Forest Lodge

Zomba Forest Lodge is an old forest rest house in a remote corner of the Zomba forest, not far from the top of the plateau at 1,400 m altitude. The lodge is owned and run by a British couple, Tom and Petal, who are full of passion for this quaint little place. It is fascinating to sit and chat with them about their projects, and they can show you some of the re-forestation work they have done if you are interested.

There are just four rooms at the lodge, and it is still home for the owners and their two dogs. The lodge is simple in its design but is comfortable and practical, despite having no electricity. Once the sun goes down the fire will be lit and solar lanterns dotted around the house. Dinner is served by candlelight and you are encouraged to get an early night to be able to rise early and enjoy a busy day exploring.

Food is taken very seriously here, everything is bought from a local market and lovingly home-cooked. The gardens are pretty, carefully laid out to allow for privacy with quiet areas to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet. The land around the lodge has about three kilometres of cleared pathways meandering through the forest, past a small waterfall and among towering trees where birds flit and monkeys feed on the fruits above you.
