Hacienda La Casona

Hacienda La Casona

Hacienda La Casona – also known as Finca Kenia- is a small B&B style property located on a quiet back street about 15 minutes’ walk from the centre of Trinidad.

Said to be one of the oldest buildings in Trinidad (built within the walls of an old fort and on the site of the town’s first aqueduct) the property is decorated in the style of an Andalusian ranch with terracotta coloured walls, dark green shutters, hammocks, saddles and trickling fountains – all of which give the place a really laid back and authentic feel.

The intimate, six room Hacienda, which has played host to a number of illustrious guests, most recently actor Ian McKellan and the Belgium ambassador to Cuba, boasts a working farm with horses as well as dramatic views of the surrounding valley.

More upmarket than a conventional B&B the rooms are well styled, some with interesting showers and most have a private terrace. The bedding- as with many places in Cuba -is a little dated but the rooms are light and airy and full of character. Adjoining rooms are available.

Located a few blocks outside the historic centre, and about a 10-15 minute walk or short taxi ride from the town centre, La Casona is a peaceful retreat to come back to after a day enjoying the sights in and around Trinidad. As the streets leading to Trinidad aren’t particularly well lit, we recommend returning to the property in the evenings via taxi.

Food and drink

The Hacienda’s restaurant serves good food for Cuban standards; much of which comes from the farms own gardens and allotment. The room rate includes a plentiful and pleasing breakfast, served in the open air courtyard restaurant.

Facilities and activities

The Finca is a working farm with around 14 strong and well cared for horses, which are available for treks for experienced horse riders. If you are interested in horse riding you can organise this directly with the hotel on arrival. There are also some lovely areas for relaxation, including several hammocks which are ideal for afternoon siestas.

Our opinion

Hacienda La Casona is a unique property and arguably one of the best places to stay in Trinidad. Its laid-back atmosphere, friendly staff and peaceful surroundings make this hotel a delightful option, particularly for those looking for a quieter alternative to more central accommodation. Although a fair distance from the centre of the city, it offers several things that other hotels just can’t; most notably it is the only accommodation option in Trinidad with views over the sugar cane fields, a working farm and also has some fantastic outdoor spaces to relax and enjoy the scenery.

The compact colonial centre of Trinidad is one of the most sublime in Latin America. The cobbled streets, terracotta rooftops and pastel coloured houses are easily explored in a morning when the light is good for photography and the temperature is still comfortable.
