Day 1 International outbound flight

International outbound flight

Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Santiago.

Day 2 Santiago

On arrival in Santiago you will be met by your guide and taken to your hotel. You have the rest of the day free to relax or start exploring.

Day 3 Puerto Varas

Santiago , Puerto Montt , Puerto Varas

Transfer to the airport this morning for your flight to Puerto Montt. On arrival pick up your hire car and drive to your hotel near Puerto Varas, a short distance away on the shore of Lake Llanquihue.

Day 4 Puerto Varas

Puerto Varas

Head out to explore the Lake District in your hire car — I would recommend going to the Osorno Volcano and the Petrohue Falls and there are several interesting towns nearby.

Day 5 Caleta Gonzalo

Puerto Varas , Caleta Gonzalo

Today you will need to set off very early as you start your journey south along the Carretera Austral from Puerto Montt to Caleta Gonzalo. This journey involves three ferry crossings and sections of tarmac and gravel road. If you're not too tired when you arrive at Caleta Gonzalo, there are a couple of short hikes nearby you could try.

Day 6 Futaleufú

Caleta Gonzalo , Futaleufú

Today you will continue south along the Carretera Austral, past Chaitén, then turn off towards the small mountain village of Futaleufu near the Argentine border.

Day 7 Futaleufú

The hotel can advise you on hiking routes in the area, you can head into the village in your car, and allow some time to relax and enjoy the spectacular views from the hotel.

Day 8 Puyuhuapi

Futaleufú , Puyuhuapi

Today you will retrace your steps to the Carretera Austral and continue south to your lodge near Puyuhuapi.

Day 9 Puyuhuapi

Today I would recommend driving to the Queulat National Park where there is a great hike up to a viewpoint of a hanging glacier. You could also go kayaking at the lake by the hotel.

Day 10 Coyhaique

Puyuhuapi , Coyhaique

Continue your drive south through more spectacular scenery to Coyhaique, the main town in the area.

Day 11 Lago General Carrera

Coyhaique , Lago General Carrera

Start along the road towards Balmaceda and then rejoin the Carretera Austral which winds its way towards Lake General Carrera — the views as you approach are stunning and you will then continue along the edge of the lake to your hotel just outside Puerto de Guadal.

Day 12 Lago General Carrera

Lago General Carrera

Enjoy activities from your lodge. Choose to visit the famous Marble Caves, take a boat onto the beautiful lake, undertake some fly fishing on the Baker River or walk or horse ride in some untouched corners of Patagonia.

Day 13 Lago General Carrera

Lago General Carrera

Today you will need to drive around the lake to Puerto Marmol where you can go by boat or kayak to the beautiful marble caves.

Day 14 Tortel

Lago General Carrera , Tortel

Continue on the Carretera Austral, south to the road-free Tortel. You will have some time in the afternoon to explore the boardwalks of the town, which has only been connected to the world by road since 2000.

Day 15 Villa O Higgins

Tortel , Villa O Higgins

Complete the journey south by road and ferry to Villa O'Higgins, truly at the end of the road.

Day 16 Villa O Higgins

Villa O Higgins

Today you have a shared boat trip to the Great (or O'Higgins) Glacier. Please note this trip is subject to weather conditions.
