The Akademie Street Guesthouses are made up of a beautiful colonial Dutch main house and several cottages hidden away in lush gardens. The cottages are light, airy and spacious, with each featuring its own private entrance and individual style, adding to the property’s character and charm. The small number of rooms creates an intimate atmosphere, which is furthered by the friendly, personalised service provided by the staff, who will be happy to make recommendations on local restaurants, wine estates and activities. From this peaceful retreat, guests can simply stroll into the town centre, visit local wineries or explore the surrounding scenery on foot or bicycle.
Rooms have their own individual name and character. Two rooms are in the main house, Twyfeling, with each featuring a king sized bed. One opens onto the garden and pool area and has a glass-roofed bathroom, while the other has a private conservatory with mountain views. Uitsig is an upper floor suite for two guests, offering mountain views from its private balcony.
Vreugde accommodates two guests, featuring a kitchenette and French doors leading to the veranda, private garden and pool. Oortuiging has two bedrooms for up to four guests (these will operate as two separate one bedroom suites if not booked for four people), a kitchen, dining room and lounge, as well as a private pool and garden. Gelatenheid is a two storey villa for two guests, featuring a loft bedroom with wraparound balcony, a kitchenette and lounge leading onto a veranda, garden and pool.
The property is situated on a quiet residential street in Franschhoek, just a few minutes’ walk from the centre of town with its many shops, restaurants, cafes and art galleries. Cape Town is around an hour’s drive away, while historic Paarl is a 20 minute drive away and the nearest beaches are a 40 minute drive away. The area is also home to a number of wineries.
Food and Drink
An extensive breakfast is served each morning at the main house, where you can sit on the vine-covered patio. For lunch and dinner, Franschhoek’s town centre is renowned for its excellent choice of top-class restaurants, cafes and bars. Staff will be happy to make recommendations and book a table for you. You’ll also be able to try plenty of fine wines from the nearby vineyards.
Each of the rooms can have twin beds instead of king sized beds, and the two bedroom Oortuiging cottage has space for up to four guests and can be booked as a two bedroom cottage in order to accommodate four guests. This cottage will be used as two separate suites for a maximum of two people each, if the two bedroom cottage is not required.
Facilities and Activities
The property has a lovely terrace and a solar-heated pool in which to relax and cool off. As some of the cottages have their own pools, the communal pool is only shared by a small number of guests. The 24 hour concierge desk provides advice on what to do in the area and can arrange activities and dinner reservations. There’s a library and living room in the main house. Free Wi-Fi is available, as well as a laundry service.
There’s lots to do in the surrounding area, including visiting nearby wine farms to taste the region’s wines and learn about their production, hiring mountain bikes or hiking on foot along some of the area’s many trails to explore the beautiful landscape, playing golf at one of the local golf courses, visiting the shops, museums and art galleries in Franschhoek, enjoying a pampering treatment in a local spa, or simply sitting outside one of the town’s cafes and watching the world go by.
We think the location of this charming property, on a quiet residential road but within walking distance of Franschhoek's main street, is ideal if you like to be in the thick of things but also have a peaceful retreat to return to.
