This private reserve is now a South African Natural Heritage Site thanks to the efforts that have been made since its inception in 1992 towards preserving and restoring the rich local environment and history. The focus at Bushmans Kloof is on preserving and restoring the indigenous culture and environment, and trying to regain a sense of what the original Africa was like. In addition to this, you get to enjoy an amazing sense of isolation from the modern world, accompanied by endless vistas under huge blue skies.

The delightful settings, high standards of accommodation and service, and great food have enabled Bushmans Kloof to become part of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux group.

Facilities and Activities

Guided walks around the estate are part of the activities included in a stay here. Rangers are able to talk you through the finer points of the rock art, demonstrating the spiritual significance and amazing representation of daily life seen in the paintings.

Game drives to view local wildlife, such as springbok, bontebok and gemsbok are also included in your stay. During these, your ranger will talk you through the amazing fynbos ecosystems, helping you to understand this remarkable flora. You can also try one of the hiking or cycling trails, which are not too strenuous and are a great way to view the beautiful scenery and some of the best rock art sites.

Croquet on the lawns, archery, canoeing on the Olifants River and fly fishing are all available. You're welcome to take a tour around the kitchen garden, including a unique San Medicinal garden, while at night the open skies offer fantastic star gazing. There are several swimming pools set amidst the landscaped grounds, or you can retreat to the peaceful sanctuary of the spa.

Environmental and Social Responsibility

Bushmans Kloof Wilderness and Wellness Retreat has won numerous ecological awards for its extraordinary environment. It's involved with a number of local community initiatives and conservation projects and is passionate about its energy saving credentials.

Our opinion

This accommodation is perfect for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life for a while and really relax. The game viewing is not the prime draw here, but rather a chance to focus on aspects of a safari that are often ignored in the quest for the Big Five, as well as learning about the local ecosystems. The rock art here is outstanding, and if you wish your whole stay can be geared around learning more about the bushmen and their paintings.
