Oriental Kwai Resort
Overlooking lush tropical gardens on the banks of the Kwai River, the Oriental Kwai Resort is a small peaceful hotel in a rural village setting about 20 minutes from Kanchanaburi city. It's a family-run property offering highly personal service and a great example of Thailand's renowned hospitality.
There are 12 cottages spread throughout the gardens, two of which overlook the river. The decor blends traditional elements such as dark woods, intricately-carved furniture and decorative Thai masks with white linens, deep red walls and pebble detailing in the bathrooms.
The resort's friendly owners, Djo and Evelien are a great source of local knowledge and happy to answer any questions you may have on the area or its history. There are a number of good golf courses nearby and Djo can recommend the most suited to you depending on your golfing preferences.
The resort has a small swimming pool as well as a children's play area. There are scooters and bicycles to rent and a restaurant serving authentic Thai cuisine as well as some Western dishes. If you would like to eat in town, a taxi, or better still, a longtail boat can be arranged to take you there.
There are just 12 cottages at the Oriental Kwai, each decorated with deep red walls, finely-detailed Thai furniture and crisp white linens. The cottages are set around the landscaped grounds and each has a private veranda with outdoor seating. Two of the cottages overlook the river. Bathrooms are modern with river pebbles used around the showers, and all rooms have air conditioning, TV and DVD player, a minibar and tea and coffee making facilities.
Set in a quiet village about 15 minutes' drive from the bridge over the Kwai River and Kanchanaburi city, the hotel has a tranquil rural location. Guests can take a taxi to the sights or for a more atmospheric journey, a longtail boat service.
Food and Drink
The riverfront restaurant offers indoor and outdoor dining, with the waterside deck; particularly scenic place to eat in the evening. The menu features a wide variety of Thai food as well as some Western dishes. The crispy chicken and roti tuna are particular highlights. Should you prefer to eat in one of the many restaurants in Kanchanaburi, staff can arrange a taxi or longtail boat to take you there.
The hotel is family run and guests with children are very welcome. The larger Family Cottage rooms can accommodate up to six people. There is also a small playground and a goat pen.
Facilities and Activities
The hotel swimming pool is set below a series of mature trees and has plenty of lounge chairs for relaxing. There's also a small gym, badminton and petanque in the garden, options to arrange a Thai massage, and scooter and bicycle rental should you wish to explore the area independently.
A peaceful haven away from the city, this friendly, family-run hotel offers a sense of daily life in rural Thailand. We particularly like the personal service and warm hospitality here.
