My wife and I are looking to go Sri Lanka at the end of January 2014 for about 15 nights (flexible). Approx split would be 6 days cultural, 3 days golf and 6 days beach. Do not require tea plantations. It should include pick up and return to airports(excluding UK). Being a very experienced world traveller I normally do my own arrangements. However as this is a new destination and there is so much variety it requires real expertise. Would appreciate if you could give me your suggestions on an itinerary and approx. cost. Audley have been recommended by a friend who has used your company before.
Thanks for your interest in Sri Lanka, I can confirm the end of January is a perfect time to go to Sri Lanka! In terms of what you would do when you get there, as you mention you would like some time visiting the cultural area, I would recommend, after a night close to the airport to recover from the flight, heading up to the area often referred to as the cultural area about 5 hours north of the airport. From your base in this area will have the chance to climb Sigiriya Rock, and visit the ancient former capitals of Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa to learn more about the history of Sri Lanka. There is also a chance to go on a jeep safari in one of the national parks, for a chance to see the Asian elephant in the wild.
From there you can head south to Kandy, famous for the Temple of the Tooth and Peradeniya Botanical gardens. In Kandy there is also an opportunity to play the golf you mentioned at the Royal Victoria Golf Club.
As you mentioned you were not interested in the Tea Country, from Kandy you can head straight down to the south coast to Galle for your time relaxing by the beach, however I would also recommend you visit Fort Galle, a lovely forted town with a colonial feel on the seafront. Obviously the hotel choice depends a little on your budget for the holiday but I can certainly recommend Aditya as a great hotel to end your holiday in Sri Lanka.
From Galle it is only a 3 hour drive back to the airport for your flight home.
