A feat of avant-garde architectural design, Hotel Viura makes for a quirky and stylish stay in the heart of La Rioja. Composed of a series of precarious-looking superimposed cubes, the property is filled with bold design features from polished concrete floors to angled walls, driftwood sculptures and original artwork.

Each of the 33 rooms has been individually designed with edgy, contemporary decor featuring large-format photographs, exposed concrete, and designer furniture alongside all the elements needed for a comfortable stay including air conditioning and Wi-Fi.

On the top floor, you’ll find a small rooftop terrace and gym. Downstairs, the large restaurant, decorated with upcycled wine barrels, offers both an à la carte and wine-paring menu each evening, while the hotel’s piano bar serves lighter fare for lunch.

OUR OPINION:

A Cubist oasis within a historic Riojan village, we love the bold design and attention to detail at the Hotel Viura. It feels like you are staying in an art gallery with the added bonus of excellent food and wine.

Rooms

Rooms are spacious and bright with views that look onto the surrounding town and the Sierra de Cantabria mountain range beyond. Polished concrete floors, large-format photographs behind the beds, designer furniture and a bright, natural palette give them a comfortable but edgy contemporary style. All rooms offer air conditioning, TVs and free Wi-Fi, while suites feature additional amenities such as private terraces and espresso machines. In the bathrooms you’ll find large, walk-in showers and underfloor heating.

Location

Hotel Viura is located in the tiny village of Álava, within the Basque section of La Rioja just a 30-minute drive from Logroño. Nearby, you’ll find a number of wineries, while the hotel also offers free bicycles for exploring the area.

Food and drink

Adorned with reclaimed wine barrels and vibrant celebrity portraits, the hotel restaurant serves a creative menu of Riojan and Basque cuisine using fresh, local ingredients. Guests can choose from an à la carte or a tasting menu, which you can also pair with a selection of wines chosen by the hotel’s sommelier. There is also a wine bar which serves light dishes throughout the day in addition to premium cocktails and wines.

Facilities and activities

In the hotel’s wellness area guests can receive a number of facial and body treatments as well as pampering massages. There are a number of walking and cycling routes through the surrounding vineyards and a traditional Basque pelota court next door. The hotel also has its own independent wine gallery where you can speak with the sommelier about featured local products.
