Belmond Maroma, Mayan Riviera, Mexico
Belmond Maroma is a lovely, luxurious hideaway nestled on the edge of the turquoise Caribbean Sea on a stunning stretch of white sand beach. Owned by the Orient Express chain the hotel has 65 rooms and suites, three swimming pools and a beautiful extensive spa tucked amongst lush gardens, cooled and shaded by coconut palms on one side, open to the dazzle of sun and sea on the other. The hotel does accept families but remains a relatively peaceful spot.
There is a tequila and ceviche bar and two restaurants - one more casual open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the other more expensive fine dining serving Mediterranean-style cuisine with a Pre-Hispanic Mexican twist. All the rooms are individually decorated with hand painted tiles, soft wool rugs, original art and furniture with en-suites. Each room has a private terrace and hammock to relax in but there are no T.Vs.
The suites all have a separate living area, king-size beds and luxury sunken bath tub. Diving, sport fishing, kayaking, parasailing, sailing, swimming with dolphins, or golf can also be arranged. There are also 2 tennis courts a fitness centre and a library on site where a selection of movies are also shown. Although there is an all-inclusive hotel next door it is fairly discrete. If you are looking to explore or shop Playa del Carmen is about 15 minutes away and costs approx $20 in a taxi.
