Olavipe Homestay, Backwaters, India
A stay at Olavipe is a unique way to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the backwaters. As guests of the Parayil Tharakans, a well-connected and prominent Syrian Christian family, you will be staying in their heritage home, built in the 1880's, amidst the lush tropical greenery of Olavipe Island.
Here you can take strolls through the village, explore the estate's 40 acres organic farm of coconut, nutmeg and vanilla, watch prawn farming or just unwind in a hammock. The family boatman can take you for a slow ride along the local backwaters or you can row a canoe on the peaceful lagoon.
Guest rooms are simply and traditionally furnished, cooled by fans hung from the high ceilings, with no air conditioning, and are located in the main house or a stone's throw away in the slightly more private gate house. Traditional style Kerala meals are taken with your well-travelled and entertaining hosts and other guests around the large family dining table.

Alternative places to stay nearby
Where possible, we like to offer a range of accommodation for each stop of your trip, chosen by our specialists as some of their favourite places to stay. To help you make the right choice, we give each property a rating based on its facilities and service, but we also look for hotels with distinct character or a location that can’t be bettered.
Exploring the backwaters of Kerala by houseboat is a wonderful and unique experience, allowing you to observe the area’s fascinating culture and rich wildlife as you glide peacefully along the water. Each vessel is comfortable and well-equipped for a short stay.
Thoughtfully laid out on the shores of Vembanad Lake, the Kumarakom Lake Resort is a relaxing retreat set amidst landscaped gardens and canals, which meander around the traditionally-styled cottages.
When you land on this island, punted across the water in a long canoe, you will feel as if you are in the middle of nowhere.
