The Eastern Cape Game Areas, South Africa

Kariega River Lodge

Kariega is a vast private game reserve in the Eastern Cape, family-owned and run, covering nearly 10,000 hectares of wilderness. The Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant) are all found here, as well as other wildlife including hippo, hyena, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and kudu and birdlife is similarly impressive with more than 280 species found here. The reserve is varied with a mix of ecosystems, making game viewing here fascinating. You will spend your days exploring the riverine forest, valley bushveld, savannah plains, fynbos and acacia woodlands searching for the wildlife here. Activities include game drives, fishing, canoe trips and boat safaris on the river and guided bush walks accompanied by expert guides.

The River Lodge, which sweeps down the banks of the Bushmans River, offers guests spectacular views of the Bushmans River Valley while relaxing in beautiful surroundings. The lodge has ten thatched suites which are all superbly appointed. Each has air-conditioning, ceiling fans and a minibar and are en suite with both bath and shower. As the suites are tucked into the vegetation, not all have views of the valley. The main area is right on the river and includes a lounge, library, dining area and boma as well as a swimming pool.
