Tour of Rustem Pasa Mosque, Turkey
A fairly small and relatively hidden mosque on the edge of the Spice Market, the Rustem Pasa Mosque is truly lovely, hidden jewel.
Still very much a working mosque, it is flooded with local stall owners and businessmen throughout the day at the calls to prayer.
The exterior is decorated with beautiful Iznik tiles – the abundance of which denoted the wealth of Rüstem Paşa, who was Grand Vizier to Süleyman the Magnificent, and for whom the mosque was designed by the architect Mimar Sinan.
Its Ottoman architecture and stunning tile work are thought to be a prototype for the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, which is widely considered to be Architect Sinan's best work.
