Kakuli, meaning 'old buffalo bull', was the nickname of famed conservationist Norman Carr, given to him by the people of the Luangwa Valley. This seasonal bushcamp sits on an elevated riverbank, offering incredible views of the area. The classic tented accommodation is in the traditional safari style, providing the quintessential base for days spent in search of the abundant wildlife in the area.
One of the few camps open during Zambia’s green season, Kakuli Bushcamp makes for the perfect base for exploring by vehicle, boat, or on foot, when few other visitors will be there.

Rooms
There are four walk-in meru-style tents with thatched roofs, cosy beds, bedside tables, simple wardrobes and large shady verandas. The huge en suite bathrooms are partially open and are great for enjoying a shower with a view. There is also a family tent. The rooms, like the camp itself, are comfortable and unpretentious, providing a really great base from which to enjoy the park and its wildlife.
Location
Kakuli boasts a wonderful location on an elevated stretch of riverbank, overlooking a wide grazing lawn that extends along the Luangwa River until it meets the Luwi River. When water levels on the river are high enough, the cap can be reached by boat.
Food and drink
Each meal is thoughtfully prepared at camp. Your day might look like waking to breakfast being cooked on an open fire before you embark on your morning activity, enjoying a riverside lunch when you return, and concluding with a three-course bush dinner under the dazzling Milky Way.
Facilities and activities
The central point of the camp is the bar and dining chitenje, quaintly constructed out of reed and thatch. In front, there's an area for open fires, where guests gather both before and after dinner, and often for breakfast with freshly cooked toast on the fire. Activities at Kakuli include guided walks and day and night game drives, while boating excursions are sometimes possible during the green season.
Activities during the green season include boating trips on the Luangwa River and walking safaris, provided the terrain is dry enough to walk, as well as traditional wildlife drives. Passing along the river, you will find a multitude of wildlife. There are plenty of hippos and crocodiles, and many other species may be seen cooling off on the high river banks or coming down to the water's edge for a drink. It is a wonderful way to view the Luangwa, with all its wildlife, and you may stop off at various locations for tea breaks or short walks into the Luangwa Park. The camp also boasts a resident lion pride, a seasonal colony of carmine bee-eaters, and an especially dense leopard population.
