Responsible Choice
Located on the eastern bank of the Luangwa River, with views into the national park, Shawa Luangwa Camp is the long-awaited dream of head guide, Jacob Shawa.
It’s a small camp of just five luxury tents, raised off the ground to maximise the views and minimise the impact on the surroundings.
When designing the camp, the operators had sustainability at the forefront. The entire camp is solar-powered, even the wildlife-viewing vehicles, making them completely silent — an advantage when approaching wildlife.

Rooms
The tents feature a unique A-frame design with folding sides to allow airflow and uninterrupted views. Each tent has an outdoor shower and a sunken bathtub, and comfortable armchairs adorn the private deck that overlooks the river below. Two of the tents are interconnected to form a two-bedroom family room. Children of all ages are welcome here.
Centrally, the camp has an open-sided bar and dining area, and a boma where daily stories of the bush are shared around a blazing fire.
Location
The camp’s prime location in the Nsefu sector of South Luangwa National Park was hand-picked by Jacob Shawa and is meant to be explored in a variety of ways. In addition to silent wildlife drives in the camp’s solar-powered land cruisers, you can explore on foot or on a relaxing river cruise.
Food and drink
Before setting off on your morning activity, warm drinks and a light snack will be available, with a full breakfast being served upon your return. Lunch is served on the elevated deck, and afternoon tea is served just before your afternoon activity.
Dinners are accompanied by the soft glow of lantern light or firelight out in the bush. Meals are communal and convivial, hosted by the great character that’s Jacob and his team, but private dining can be arranged upon request.
Facilities and activities
Generally, morning activities depart not long after dawn and venture into the park to explore the grassy plains and riverbanks. While the sun is at its hottest, you have a few hours to enjoy the camp, cool off in the refreshing pool, relax in the shade of a tree, or snooze in your tent with the sides open so you don't miss any passing wildlife. You'll then head out again in the mid-afternoon, stopping for sundowners in a scenic spot before looping back to the camp after dark with the use of a spotlight to identify any nocturnal sightings. When the river levels permit, it’s also possible to take to the water in a solar-powered boat.
