El Remanso Rainforest Wildlife Lodge

Corcovado & Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica

Responsible Choice

We've hand-selected a range of tours and stays across the world that go above and beyond to be a force for good by supporting local businesses, educating staff, challenging local norms, or promoting conservation and biodiversity efforts. Your Responsible Choice helps increase the positive impact of your trip.

Set in its own reserve and with a variety of jungle trails just a short walk from the lodge, relatively little physical exertion is required to enjoy the astonishing variety of flora and fauna to be found around El Remanso Rainforest Wildlife Lodge.

Nature walks of varying duration can easily be arranged, accompanied by carefully selected naturalist guides whose knowledge and passion for the wildlife and birds really is remarkable. Some of the species you may see on the trails include scarlet macaws, sloth, anteaters and four different species of monkey. In addition to jungle walks, a variety of other activities such as waterfall rappelling, dolphin watching, horse riding, birdwatching and surfing lessons can also be arranged.

OUR OPINION:

Quite simply one of our favourite lodges in Costa Rica — the prime wildlife spotting opportunities, comfortable rooms and superb guides will make your stay here one to remember.

Rooms

El Remanso Rainforest Wildlife Lodge features a handful of rooms and suites spanning five categories: Standard Rooms, Classic Cabins, Deluxe Cabins, Deluxe Suites and Casa Osa — a larger option for up to eight guests. Some are situated adjacent to each other in a series of casas (houses), and others in stand-alone cabins. The casas and cabins are scattered around the lush grounds and all are furnished in a simple but classic style using tropical woods collected from trees that have fallen in the area. Windows can be covered by wooden shutters or curtains (a conscious decision has been made not to use glass to prevent injury to birds). Beds are protected by netting. All rooms are cooled by ceiling fans and feature private bathrooms with hot showers as well as their own outdoor terraces, ideal for enjoying the sounds of the rainforest.

Location

El Remanso Rainforest Wildlife Lodge is situated on the southwest tip of Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula, a region renowned for its enormous variety of wildlife. Access to the lodge is by a 22 kilometre (14 mile) drive from the regional airport of Puerto Jimenez. Various jungle trails can be accessed a short distance from the lodge, and a wild beach can be found a 30-minute walk away (please be aware that it's a steep climb on the way back).

Food and drink

All meals are served in the lodge’s wonderful open dining area, perfect for looking out over the forest and covered in case of tropical showers. Guests can choose from a daily set menu featuring a mixture of international and local dishes. Cuisine is fresh and imaginative given the lodge’s remote jungle location, and El Remanso is also a great option for vegetarians. The lodge’s poolside bar serves fresh smoothies, soft drinks, local beers and a variety of cocktails.

Facilities and activities

El Remanso’s swimming pool is a wonderful place to cool down, its elevated position affording wonderful views. There's also ample decking area and small poolside bar.

Environmental and social responsibility

The lodge strives to minimise its impact on the local environment, using renewable energies and constructing buildings using naturally fallen timber. It also has measures to reduce the amount of waste produced such as recycling and composting. Cleaning products and toiletries used are biodegradable and water is responsibly sourced from two springs in the reserve.
