Siolim House, Goa, India
This 300 year old Portuguese mansion is located not far from the river and Chapora's crumbling fort which itself has views over a marine harbour.
The renovation and conversion of the mansion into a small boutique hotel took three years. Each of the seven characterful guest rooms is large and airy with huge antique beds and en-suite shower room.
The standard rooms are air-conditioned. The two suites, which are located upstairs, are enormous and are fan-cooled only. As well as the small lawned garden there is also a pillared courtyard with a fountain, several lounge areas to relax in and a swimming pool.
Dining is for in-house guests only. The menu is limited but everything is freshly cooked and authentic Goan style. To alleviate the problem of plastic bottle disposal the property has taken the initiative to provide purified filtered drinking water.
Siolim village lies about 20 km from Panaji and 7 km from the beach and other hotels and restaurants, which is easily reached by taxi.
The best beaches nearby are at Mandrem, Morjim, Arambol and Ashwem.
