Stay at Surya Samudra Beach Resort, Kovalam
This hotel is the best in the region, particularly for those seeking very traditional Keralan accommodation and a quiet beach.
Surya Samudra Beach Resort, Kovalam, India
Located 8 kms (5 miles) south of Kovalam, this heritage resort occupies an area of 25 acres of coconut plantations on a cliff top beside the famous Malabar Coast.
Many of the 22 cottages are original 'tharavadu' Keralan wooden houses, transplanted to Surya Samudra and all feature terracotta roofs, tiled floors, wooden pillars, and ornate doors. All face the sea and have spacious open air bathrooms. The rock swimming pool overlooks the sea and there is access to a quiet beach below, reached via a series of steps down from the garden.
The Spa Niraamaya offers Ayurvedic massages as well as other oriental and western treatments. The Ottopura restaurant serves Indian and European dishes, using fruits and vegetables from the garden and seafood from the local fisherman. The hotel has its access to its own private beach, a real bonus in an area where the majority of resorts have private access to parts of various beaches.
Yoga sessions are available and various excursions can be arranged by the hotel such as boat rides, fishing and sightseeing in Trivandrum.
