Situated among the winding alleyways of Barcelona’s historic Gothic Quarter, the Mercer Hotel is an elegant property that expertly blends its ancient surroundings with modern-day comforts. Built into the city’s original Roman walls, the majority of the property is located within a medieval palace, however, some sections of the original Roman structure, including the base of a defensive tower, are still visible.

White-washed stone arches lead through from the entrance to an open seating area with soft grey sofas, while panoramic windows open out onto a citrus tree-filled courtyard where breakfast is served in the summer months. Up on the roof, a large terrace is home to plenty of comfortable loungers and a small plunge pool where you can relax and enjoy views of the city.

The 28 rooms are decorated in a minimalist style with exposed brick, soft rugs and pale wood floors. The hotel has two restaurants — one fine dining option, The Mercer, serving carefully-crafted Mediterranean dishes, and the more casual Le Bouchon, which serves traditional tapas.

OUR OPINION:

One of Barcelona’s most elegant boutique hotels, the Mercer offers a sense of refined understatement. We love the historic setting and the location in the heart of the Gothic Quarter.

Rooms

Broad windows offer views out onto the Gothic Quarter, the vertical garden or the inner courtyard, lined with orange trees. Large, comfy beds are made up with Egyptian-cotton sheets, while other modern comforts such as flat-screen TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi, complimentary minibar and air conditioning also come as standard. Many rooms incorporate historic aspects of the hotel building such as the original medieval stone walls but contrast them with modern, minimalist design, smart, contemporary furniture, solid oak floors and rainfall showers in bathrooms. Suites offer additional amenities including espresso machines and a tapas tasting.

Location

Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter is a labyrinth of cobbled medieval streets filled with restaurants and cafés as well as architecture from the 15th century, much of which is impressively intact. In just over ten minutes you can walk to the waterfront Barceloneta district, and in less than ten minutes you can reach the main pedestrian thoroughfare, La Rambla. There is also a metro station just around the corner for exploring further afield.

Food and drink

The hotel offers two main dining options: Mercer Restaurant, a refined dining venue serving a rotating seasonal menu of local Mediterranean fare, and, on the main floor, the more casual Le Bouchon, which opens out onto the street and serves classic tapas. The cocktail lounge merges modern style with exposed stone walls, while the rooftop terrace is a popular spot for a drink in more pleasant weather.
