Ocean House is owned by the Haida people, and the property has been designed to reflect and celebrate their culture. Decorative Haida artwork and objects are interspersed with a sleek, contemporary design.
This floating lodge sits in a secluded inlet, Stads K'uns GawGa, and is surrounded by old-growth forests, while unspoiled beaches and village sites are close by. There are just 12 rooms, all decorated in a soft grey palette with splashes of Haida art. The hotel offers a range of guided activities and experiences, from workshops with Haida craftsmen and the lodge’s own artist-in-residence to kayaking, paddling in a traditional Haida canoe, wildlife watching, and visits to archaeological sites by floatplane. Even your arrival is an event: the lodge is only accessible via helicopter.
This is one of the best lodges in Canada: we love its ethos, the fact that it has so many experiences on offer, and its location — plus, it has lashings of style.

Photos of Ocean House
Each of the lodge's 12 guest rooms is tastefully decorated in a muted palette of stone and grey hues, with twin, king or queen beds, en suite bathrooms, and complimentary Wi-Fi. The rooms aren’t particularly spacious but they’re very artfully designed, with Haida objets d’art and views out over the glassy inlet.
The lodge is located in a hidden spot in Stads K'uns GawGa (Peel Inlet) on Haida Gwaii's west coast. It can only be reached via a 70-minute flight from Vancouver to Sandspit, then a 15-minute helicopter transfer. There are no signs of human habitation around the lodge: this may be one of the most secluded places you’ll ever visit.
Food and drink
All meals, along with wine at dinner, are included, and the lodge's menu focuses on fresh, local food, especially fresh seafood. There’s a hot and cold buffet breakfast with Canadian trimmings such as pancakes and maple syrup. Lunch is usually a packed lunch which you pick and choose yourself. Dinner is three-course fine dining, eaten communally with other guests.
Facilities and activities
There’s a bar and lounge with a central fireplace, and in the evenings you can speak with the property’s onsite cultural interpreter and resident artist who will tell you all about Haida culture. The lodge also has a library, gym, hot tub, sauna and a very sleek spa with views out over the water. Kayaks and stand-up paddle boards can be used independently as well as on guided tours.
