One of the natural wonders of the world, Niagara Falls never fails to impress by its sheer scale and the volume of thundering water that can be heard for miles around. This is one of the most visited places on earth, with roughly 22 million people coming to Niagara every year. It’s especially busy during the summer months, making winter a much more peaceful time to visit.

Thanks to all the snow and ice, the falls look completely different and arguably more beautiful during the winter. Sections of it are completely frozen over and icy mist rises up from the water. The trees and plants beside the falls are frozen solid and it’s very cold, but there are shops and cafes along the walking trail close to the falls where you can pop in and get a warming coffee or hot chocolate.

One of the best ways to take in the falls is from a helicopter. You can take a short flight over the falls and the Niagara River, gazing out across the whole water system.

Over the past two centuries, Niagara Falls have been a magnet for visitors from around the world. As a result, Canadian and US entrepreneurs have developed ever-increasing and inventive ways of parting visitors from their money. You should not let this put you off, as the natural spectacle and power here is remarkable. Be prepared for some rather tacky commercialism and fast-food restaurants aplenty. Despite all of this, Niagara Falls is one of those sights that has to be seen to be full appreciated.
