There can be few hotels with a location to match the Marriott Mena House, nestled directly beneath the looming hulk of the Great Pyramid. Built as a hunting lodge and base for exploring the pyramids by Khedive Ismail, a 19th century Egyptian ruler, it was patronised in the early days by international royalty and high society, a trend that continued after its conversion to a hotel.

Churchill and Roosevelt met here to plan the D-Day invasions, and there are suites in their names to commemorate the event. The hotel has a mix of classic 19th century Arabesque architecture and design, and more modern areas, complete with a pleasant garden and pool area.

Rooms

There are two main options when it comes to room types. There are the more characterful rooms in the older Palace Wing or the more modern accommodation in the Garden Wing. Although the rooms in the Garden Wing are more contemporary and lack the opulent décor of the palace rooms they do offer much better value for money and still have views overlooking the famous pyramids.

Location

Although the property has an ideal location for exploring the Pyramids, it is a fair distance from downtown Cairo. This does mean that you will need to drive into the city to see the main sites of central Cairo. The hotel is also located just off one of the busiest roads in Cairo and although it doesn’t suffer from any noise pollution, this does mean that you are likely to get caught in traffic when travelling into the city.

Food and Drink

Breakfast is served in the 139 All-Day Dining Room & Terrace and breakfast boxes are available upon request if you have an early start. The hotel also offers traditional Arabic cuisine as well as Italian and Indian options within its four different restaurants. Afternoon tea, cocktails and shishas are also available to help you relax after a day exploring the city.

Facilities and Activities

The hotel has a very large outdoor pool (which is heated in winter), a gym, spa and an 18 hole golf course.

Our opinion

The Marriott Mena House Hotel offers excellent value for money, and has something for every taste. The Pyramid View rooms are our favourite.
