Lucy on the Huangyaguan part of the Great Wall

Lucy, Russia, China & Japan Senior Specialist

My interest in Asia first began while studying business administration at the University of Vermont. I enrolled in an international business course in Qingdao in eastern China and after arriving back to the US, I could not wait to return to further explore the culture, cuisine, landscapes and rich history of China, and other Asian countries.

After graduating from university, I moved to Boston and pursued a career in hospitality, managing guest relations and creating tailor-made trips to Boston. My desire to travel coupled with a passion for providing excellent service, led me to Audley Travel.

During my time at Audley, I have had the opportunity to revisit China, Russia and Japan, and I hope to continue inspiring others to explore the wonders of Asia.

Outside of work I thoroughly enjoy skiing, running, discovering new restaurants with friends, and teaching indoor spin classes part time at a local Boston gym.

Bai architecture, Dali

I recommend visiting - Dali

The old town of Dali, in Yunnan Province in the southwest China, is home to the Bai people, one of China's 56 minorities. Their culture and language are very different from the rest of China with bright traditional clothing, distinctive architecture and food traditions that champion cold and spicy dishes. Stroll along the pedestrian-only streets where vendors sell fresh fruit and local products on either side of a shallow canal or explore the surrounding landscape. To the east scenic Erhai Lake is surrounded by mountains, while to the west, the breathtaking Cangshan Mountains peek out of the clouds and tower over the ancient city.

Garden Yard, Superior Standard Double The Bivou,Lijiang

I recommend staying at - The Bivou

Medium

The jagged peaks of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain look down over The Bivou in Lijiang, a small, boutique hotel built around two century-old farmyards constructed with traditional Naxi techniques. The hotel is set in the old village of Shuhe, which is a quieter area of Lijiang, a timeless town of cobbled streets and ancient buildings. The hotel takes pride in providing a personal service and every staff member goes out of their way to ensure each guest has a memorable stay, offering suggestions for local activities and places to visit, and preparing incredible Chinese and Western food with ingredients from their organic garden.

I'll never forget when…

Visiting the Great Wall for the second time was a completely different experience to my first. I visited a remote section of the wall in Huanyaguan about a two and a half hour drive from Beijing, and got a totally different impression of this massive fortification. I visited in mid-October when the weather was cooler and there were fewer visitors and as the sun shone down on me as I hiked along the wall, I got sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and the seemingly endless snaking ribbon of the wall in the distance. I'll never forget it.
