Stay at Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, Machu Picchu

Located close to the entrance to the citadel of Machu Picchu, the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge offers high quality accommodation and service in an enviable position.

Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, Machu Picchu, Peru

Situated just outside the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, the Sanctuary Lodge has 31 classically decorated rooms and an excellent restaurant. All rooms are equipped with Wi-Fi, minibar, satellite TV and DVD player. The Superior rooms offer king size or twin beds and views of an inner courtyard or access to a private patio with a sitting area. To the front of the hotel are Mountain View rooms, whilst two suites offer prime views of the surrounding mountains and also have a separate indoor seating area and bedroom.

There are some lovely gardens at the hotel where you can find a great variety of native plants and flowers, including orchids depending on the season. This area is also a great place to see a variety of hummingbirds.

The hotel has two restaurants. The Tinkuy Buffet Restaurant offers a daily lunch buffet that is open to the guests of the lodge and visitors to Machu Picchu, whereas the Tampu Restaurant and Bar offers dishes from its international or Peruvian à la carte menu. In the evening, after the crowds have left for the day, the Tampu Restaurant turns into a fine and intimate restaurant with capacity for just 72 people.

Our opinion

The privilege of staying by the ruins is an expensive one, but the lodge does provide everything you could expect of a Belmond property: professional service, fine dining and top quality furnishing and fittings. Do not expect a classic view of Machu Picchu from any of the rooms but stunning views of the surrounding mountains can be had from the beautiful gardens. The buffet restaurant can get crowded at lunchtime, so time your lunch break tactically (all meals are included during your stay). However, the Tampu Restaurant becomes a charming and refined location for dinner after a busy day exploring Machu Picchu.
