Joanna at Machu Picchu in Peru

Joanna, South America Specialist

Joanna's love of travel began as a child and she would often daydream about travelling the world, especially South America as it was always a life-long ambition of hers to walk the Inca Trail in Peru. Her ambition finally became a reality as she travelled the world, including South America, in 2010.

Joanna worked a number of summer and ski seasons in Europe throughout her twenties and before joining Audley, worked for another travel company. She had always been fascinated by the history of the Inca's and the different cultures and landscapes this amazing continent has to offer. She was also fortunate to visit Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia during her first time in South America.

On her first Audley trip she returned to Peru as well as visiting Ecuador and the fascinating Galapagos Islands. Joanna has also visited Costa Rica and Brazil with Audley on further research trips, exploring new cities as well as discovering the Costa Rican wildlife and meeting the locals in the wonderful Brazilian Amazon.

Cuzco, Peru

I recommend visiting - Cuzco, Peru

Peru is an amazingly diverse country, from the Andean mountains to the lush lowlands of the Amazon jungle, and one of my favorite destinations is Cuzco, Peru. The city offers a wealth of history as well as plenty of shops, restaurants and culture. It is the starting point for many who board the train to the magical Machu Picchu.

Situated at the high altitude of 3,326 meters (10,912 feet) above sea level, Cuzco was once the foremost city of the Inca Empire. The city offers ancient treasures, archaeological sights, historic Plazas and colonial mansions and churches to explore. Walking around the cobblestone streets, surrounded by high Inca walls, you get a real sense of the history of the city. With its markets, the very grand cathedral, the artisan shops of the San Blas area of the city and the panoramic views, you certainly won't be disappointed.

Das Cataratas Hotel, Iguacu

I recommend staying at - Belmond Hotel das Cataratas, Brazil

First Class

This hotel is THE place to stay in Iguaçu. As one of only two properties within the boundaries of the Falls National Park, this hotel offers first class service as well spacious comfortable rooms, some with views of the magnificent falls. Although this is a relatively large property it still has a great boutique feel to it and the attention to detail is noticeable everywhere. The pool is one of the best I have had the pleasure to swim in and the location is unbeatable for any visit to the falls. The trail to view the Brazilian side is across the road from the hotel. Amazing.

I'll never forget when…

The fascinating Machu Picchu is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. Having dreamt about the moment for over 20 years, my heart skipped a beat when I first viewed this amazing Inca Citadel, it's quite simply — breathtaking. Definitely a must do on any trip to Peru.

I was fortunate enough to complete the four day (three night) Inca Trail in 2010, visiting other Inca ruins along the way, and on my last visit I climbed Huayna Picchu to experience Machu Picchu from above. The views were definitely worth the 45 minute steep climb. Outstanding.
