My love of the mountains developed from a young age from being carted up hills in my Dad's rucksack. After university in North Wales (spending most of my time up hills in Snowdonia), I worked for three years in the snowy Alps for a luxury ski company, and the same company later bought me to London. I then joined Audley and have been relishing every opportunity to be back in the mountains, this time in Canada.
Since joining Audley I've had the opportunity to explore Canada's best bits; wild Vancouver Island, the spectacular Rocky Mountains, historic eastern cities like Montreal, the phenomenal back country of the Yukon Territories and the coastal Maritime Provinces in the east. One of my recent highlights was hiking around the Cabot Trail on the eastern tip of Cape Breton Island in the off-season and coming face to face with a wild bull moose. Thankfully, I wasn't offensive to him and he carried on eating his berries.
I'll never forget when…
Often the best memories come from moments that couldn't have been booked or prepared for. During my stay at Echo Valley Ranch, I had the opportunity to go horse riding for the day. The wranglers, Steve and Maggie, were excellent and I had a great ride around the many acres of woodland that surround the ranch. At the end I offered to help take the horses back up the valley where they graze in the evenings. Steve and Maggie were grateful for the help, and asked if I could ride bareback. So the end of my day consisted of rounding up 20 horses and riding bareback through the ranch lands, back up the valley into the sunset.
