Visit Passikudah, Sri Lanka

Passikudah is a relaxed coastal retreat on Sri Lanka’s east coast, around 19 miles (35 kilometres) north of Batticaloa, where a long sweep of golden sand meets one of the island’s calmest bays. Known for its gently shelving shoreline, the sea here remains strikingly shallow for a considerable distance, allowing you to wade far out into warm, clear water — a rare characteristic that sets it apart from many of Sri Lanka’s beaches.

The bay itself is naturally sheltered, creating consistently tranquil conditions during the summer season and making it particularly well-suited to swimming and leisurely time in the water. Sunrises here are especially memorable, with soft light stretching across the curve of the bay, while days unfold at an unhurried pace, accompanied by the sound of small fishing boats and the occasional breeze off the ocean.

While there are pockets of marine life to discover just offshore, Passikudah is less about vibrant coral reefs and more about its sense of space and serenity. It’s a destination that lends itself to slowing down — whether that’s long walks along the shoreline, time spent by the water’s edge, or simply enjoying the views across the bay.
