Repère Boréal

Québec, Canada

Repère Boréal is a selection of modern cabins, shipping container units, chalets, and treehouses just off the Route de Fleuve, halfway between Baie-Saint-Paul and La Malbaie. Tucked away in the woods, a stay here feels like an escape into nature, while the thoughtful additional touches ensure a sense of comfort. The location boasts views over the St Lawrence River and surrounding forests, and feels removed from tourist crowds, while still only being a short drive to the local towns.

At the main reception, you can find a rooftop terrace which makes an excellent spot to enjoy a drink while watching the sunset or have a coffee watching the sunrise over the river. There's also a Nordic spa nestled in the woods and decorated with fairy lights, with hot tubs, a cold pool, sauna, and treatment room. Here you can sit back and listen to the bird calls and the wind rustling the tree branches while feeling your muscles unwind in the warm water.

OUR OPINION:

This collection of self-contained units makes an excellent natural escape without ever feeling like you're too far away from necessities, has a welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and additional facilities to those you'd typically see in such a setting. Our favourite parts are the rooftop terrace and the forest-based spa.

Rooms

There are several options at Repère Boréal, ranging from the pod-style stargazing Maikan units, to the Shiship shipping containers, to the Mashk duplex units, all the way to the larger Nish, sleeping up to eight people. The units are modern in design and feel spacious thanks to the large windows and space-saving designs. Each unit is fitted with a kitchenette including a fridge, stove top, mini oven, along with oil, salt, and sugar. All units have complimentary Wi-Fi access. The rooms aim to make the most of the location with large, floor-to-ceiling windows looking over the forest, and in the Uhu treehouse units, the river in the distance.

Location

Repère Boréal is set in the forest just five minutes from Saint Irenée and Les Éboulements. The larger towns of La Malbaie and Baie-Saint-Paul are about 25 minutes’ drive in either direction and offer art galleries, restaurants, and farm shops. For a touch of adventure, both Hautes Gorges de la Rivière Malbaie and Grands Jardins National Parks are within an hour’s drive and have many hiking and biking trails. For wildlife spotting, Baie-Sainte-Catherine is about 90 minutes north along the coast and offers whale watching trips in the St Lawrence River.

Food and drink

While there is no restaurant on site, La Malbaie and Baie-Saint-Paul are a short drive away with small farm-to-fork restaurants. Each unit has cooking facilities including a small, portable oven, stove top, fridge, and all cooking equipment. There are plenty of farms in the area where you can pick up produce for your stay. If you are missing anything, the reception stocks locally sourced produce including homemade ready meals, salad, butter, cheese, bread, and charcuterie.

Environmental and social responsibility

Given its location, the owners have a strong connection to nature and being environmentally friendly. All food and drink sold in the reception is from local farmers and producers, the units themselves and much of the furniture inside is made on site, and grey water from the bathrooms is purified on site using coconut shells.
